Last Thursday and Saturday, Holstein enthusiasts competed for the top prize at the annual Indiana State Holstein Show at the Whitley County 4-H Fairgrounds in Columbia City.
The grand champion of the show was exhibited by Prestige Genetics of Martinton, Ill. They claimed top prize with their winning senior 3-year-old cow that was also tapped intermediate champion of the show. The reserve was also exhibited by Prestige Genetics. The cow first claimed top prize in the 4-year-old class and was named senior champion.
The reserve senior champion was exhibited by Lookwell Farm of Elkhart.
In the heifer show, Prestige Genetics exhibited both the junior and reserve junior champion heifers. Premiere exhibitor and premier breeder awards were earned by Tri-Koebel Holsteins and Jerseys of Three Oaks, Mich.
A total of 150 Holsteins were exhibited in the open show with 93 showing in the junior show.
In the junior show, Dustin Kemp of Middlebury exhibited the grand champion cow. The winning senior 3-year-old was also named intermediate champion. The reserve grand was exhibited by Madelyn Meyer which was also named senior champion and won the 4-year-old cow class.
Junior champion honors in the heifer show were awarded to Kananai Price of Jonesboro and the reserve junior champion was exhibited by Soren Price also of Jonesboro.
Jersey Show
In the Jersey show, the grand champion of the open show was the winning 5-year-old exhibited by Sunrose Holsteins and Jeff and Michelle Reasner. The reserve was the first-place senior 2-year-old exhibited by Golden Oaks Jerseys.
The Dowty family exhibited the junior champion heifer of theJersey show which was the winning summer yearling heifer. The reserve was shown by Bob Hill. The heifer was first named top spring yearling.
Forty-six Jerseys were shown in the open show.
During the junior Jersey show, 33 head were exhibited. The grand and senior champion cow was exhibited by Patrick Dowty of Goshen. The cow first claimed top prize in the senior 2-year-old class. The reserve grand and reserve senior cow was shown by Andrew Dowty of Goshen. His cow was the first place 4-year-old.
In the heifer show, the junior champion Jersey was the first-place summer yearling heifer and was exhibited by Andrew Dowty. The reserve was shown by Elise Mercer of Bryant, which was the first-place spring calf.
