Cass County 4-H Members Earn $181,517 at Auction

The annual Cass County 4-H Fair auction took place Saturday afternoon at the fairgrounds in Logansport. This year, the auction totaled $181,517.20, which was down from last year's total of $199,655.14.

The evening started off with the beef sale. Mason Keller of Westfield sold his grand champion market steer for $2.70 per pound at 1,300 pounds for a total of $3,510, to a buyers group (see list). The reserve champion market steer, which did not sell, was owned by Paige Longstreth.

A total of 20 beef animals were sold for a total of $37,886.75.

The dairy beef sale began with Allison Foerg, Burnettsville, selling her grand champion finished steer for $2.07 per pound at 1,425 pounds for a total of $2,950, to a buyers group (see list at end of story). The reserve champion finished steer was purchased by Kova Ag Products, Country Ag LLC, and S and D Foerg Family Farms for $1.68 per pound at 1,600 pounds, totaling $2,690 and was owned by Conner Walker, Logansport.

The grand champion dairy feeder steer was owned by Aiden Lowe, Lucerne, and was purchased for $9 per pound at 468 pound for a total of $4,212, to a buyers group (see list). The reserve champion dairy feeder was shown by Allison Foerg and did not sell.

A total of $26,839.50 was made from the sale of 14 finished dairy steers, and a total of $7,827.40 was made from the sale of seven dairy feeders.

Bradley Berlet, Walton, exhibited the grand champion market lamb that was sold for $29.24 per pound at 131 pounds, totaling $3,830.44, to a buyers group (see list). The reserve champion market lamb was shown by Jasmine Rudicel and did not sell.

Seventeen lambs were sold during the auction and brought in a total of $10,516.69.

One bottle of milk was sold by the 4-H Assn. and all of the proceeds went to the Dick Rusk Memorial Fund. The milk was purchased for $3,050.

Benjamin Vandeburg, Walton, started the rabbit sale with his grand champion meat pen. The pen sold for a total of $500 and was purchased by Berlet Farms. Hailey Gotshall, Lucerne, sold her reserve champion meat pen to Cass County Republicans for $200.

In total, five rabbit pens were sold, bringing in $1,250.

Sixteen poultry animals were sold Saturday evening, bringing in $2,325. The grand champion commercial chicken pair sold to Walton Elevator for $300 and was exhibited by Coleton Appleton, Delphi. The reserve champion commercial poultry animals were exhibited by Cole Appleton and did not sell. The grand champion exhibition poultry animals were shown by Olivia Coryea and did not sell. Keenan Appleton, Delphi, owned the reserve champion exhibition poultry animals that sold for a total of $225 and was purchased by Don and Karen Schlegelmilch.

Four meat goats were sold during the auction and brought $1,113.25. The grand champion meat goat was shown by Ethan Beaman and did not sell. The reserve champion meat goat wether also did not sell and was also shown by Ethan Beaman. Eleven meat goats were sold.

Grace Hart exhibited the grand champion dairy goat which sold for $3,092, weighing 78 pounds at $39.64 per pound, to a buyers groups (see list). The reserve champion dairy goat was shown by Nathan Adams and did not sell.

The dairy goat sale added up to equal $5,718.50.

The grand champion hog, owned by Ethan Beaman, did not sell in the auction. McCoy Taylor, Walton, exhibited the reserve champion barrow that was sold for $10.48 per pound at 263 pounds for a total of $2,756.24, to a buyers group (see list).

Overall, the swine portion of the auction totaled $75,072.28 from the sale of 146 animals.

Between the start of each species sale, a special item was sold. The special item sale started with the ag ambassador basket, and included a cheese platter, the American flag and the Indiana flag, and a kiss from the Cass County 4-H Fair queen, Shailin Heckard, which sold for $6,600, a new record. The specialty auction also included a "llama bag" and two signs that will be able to be used as space for advertisements come next fair season.
