Wet Conditions Slow Crop Harvest

Published: Friday, November 17, 2017

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 12.

Existing wet conditions and additional rainfall during the beginning and end of the week continued to slow down harvest progress.

Damage to standing crops was reported in the central part of the state due to last Sunday's storms.

Below average temperatures brought reports of frost throughout the state. The statewide average temperature was 39.3 degrees, 4.1 degrees below normal.

Statewide precipitation was 1.25 inches, above average by .44 inches.

There were 3.9 days available for fieldwork for the week, up .6 days from the previous week.

Regionally, corn was 79 percent harvested for grain in the north, 78 percent in central, and 86 percent in the south.

Soybeans were 93 percent harvested in the north, 90 percent in central, and 82 percent in the south.

Winter wheat was 96 percent planted in the north, 89 percent in central, and 90 percent in the south.

Winter wheat was 85 percent emerged in the north, 75 percent in central, and 72 percent in the south.

Winter wheat rated in good to excellent condition were 79 percent in the north, 72 percent in central, and 67 percent in the south.

Mid-week breaks in the rain allowed farmers to make progress with the corn harvest, while consistently wet soil conditions continued to impede soybean harvest.

Winter wheat planting progressed closer to completion, but the cool weather slowed emergence. Livestock were reported in good condition, despite reports of the first hard freezes throughout the state.

Other activities for the week included drying and hauling grain to elevators, spreading fall fertilizer, fall tillage, and cleaning equipment for storage.

The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2016 and 5-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 18, 18, 16, 18; soybeans harvested, 13, 13, 13, 13.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2016 and 5-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 80, 70, 93, 90; soybeans harvested, 89, 85, 95, 95; winter wheat planted, 92, 87, 95, 96; winter wheat emerged, 77, 67, 84, 84.
