Grant Sanchez Serves as Indiana FFA State Sentinel

Published: Friday, February 16, 2018

Grant Sanchez of the Fairfield FFA chapter is serving as the 2017-18 Indiana FFA state sentinel, through which he has an opportunity to impact over 12,000 members of the Indiana FFA Assn. Grant is the son of Scott and Michelle Sanchez of New Paris.

1. SAE: "Sheep production and agricultural services"

2. When you were 5, what did you want to be when you grew up? "When I was 5, I saw myself following my mom's footsteps in becoming an elementary school teacher."

3. Hobbies: "Sports, listening to music, being outdoors, and having fun with my teammates!"

4. Since being elected to the Indiana FFA officer team, where have you traveled? "Since election, I've already traveled to every corner of the state and in between, putting about 15,000 miles on my car so far. In addition, I had the opportunity to travel to Georgia with a teammate for the National Young Farmers Convention, and will travel to Washington, D.C with another teammate for Ag Day in March to advocate agriculture to Indiana legislature."

5. Who are some of the dignitaries that you have met? "Throughout the month of December, it was pretty cool getting to meet several agricultural business owners across the state and learning more about their company and their partnership with FFA. We also had the opportunity to hang out with then-ISDA Director Ted McKinney in his office, and then welcome new ISDA Director Bruce Kettler into position. But the neatest was in August during State Fair. U.S Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue stopped by the FFA Pavilion and played a round of putt-putt and was intrigued to learn more about Indiana agriculture."

6. What has been your favorite moment so far? "That's a really tough one. Every moment has been amazing with my team. However, I'd say my favorite moment so far during office was traveling across the state with one or two of my teammates for three weeks during Kickoff season. We took those three weeks to travel throughout Indiana to kick off the FFA year. We were able to interact with a lot of passionate agriculture students."

7. Future plans: "After we (state officers) retire in June, I plan to go back to my summer job at EliteAgronomy and scout crops for a few weeks. Then, come fall, I will head to Purdue University, where I plan to dual major in agronomy and agriculture education, with a minor in plant genetics, breeding, and biotechnology."
