124 Animal Lots Generate $86,507 for Miami 4-H'ers

The Miami County 4-H Fair livestock auction last Saturday in Peru featured 124 lots that generated $86,507 for 4-H'ers, scholarship and food bank donations. Last year's sale earned $89,986 on 134 lots.
During the auction, 28 hogs were donated to two local food banks, nearly 7,022 pounds of live weight. About $2,300 was contributed to the Sara Herrell Memorial Scholarship fund.
Katelynn Johnson exhibited the grand champion beef steer. She sold her 1,365-pound animal for $1.58 a pound, or $2,150. The buyer group included the Leeuw family, Pat and Laura Sadowsky, All Animals Veterinary Clinic of Lebanon, Bush Vet Service of Flora, Merritt Farms and Mooney Outdoor Enterprises.
The reserve champion steer shown by Blake Sadowsky sold for slightly more. The 1,295-pound animal sold for $1.78 a pound, or $2,300, to a support ground of Scott Hanes representing CAPS, Troxel Equipment, Michael and Carmen Kuhn, Crop Production Service, Dobbs Legal Group, Redline Equipment of Logansport, Family Farm and Home, and Beacon Credit Union.
Karli Miller earned grand champion for her dairy feeder steer, and Kaden Miller took home reserve champion for his dairy feeder steer. They did not sell their animals at the livestock auction.
Olivia Kuhn earned grand champion for her heifer at the fair, but she did not sell her animal at the livestock auction.
Alaina Weaver showed the grand champion dairy cow. The milk sold at the auction for $950 to Protein Express Milk Hauler, First Bank of Berne, Lauren Jernas-Semax, Ceres Solutions Co-op, Knight Farms, Dawn Straka of POET Biorefining and Redline Equipment of Logansport.
The grand champion meat type market goat was shown by Karasyn Kuhn. At the auction she earned $18.53 per pound for her 58-pound animal, for a total of $1,075. Buyers included Robert Moore, Chris and Crystal Smith, Ed Burns and Sons Trucking and Beacon Credit Union.
Kate Cobler sold her reserve champion meat type market goat for $5.65 per pound, or $350. Crossroads Banks and Miami County Metal Mash were the buyers.
There were two grand champion pygmy goats at the Miami County Fair. They were exhibited by Dekodah Stronger and Britney Stroud. Stronger also earned reserve champion pygmy goat. The goats were not sold at the auction.
The grand champion meat pen rabbits were exhibited and sold by Abby Richardson. John Wildermuth, Musselman Brothers Inc., Beacon Credit Union and Sarah Correll made up the buyers group that purchased the animals for $450. Richardson also showed the grand champion poultry, which she did not sell at the auction.
Several small animal species did not sell at the auction. The grand champion turkey was exhibited by Slate Boggs, and Britney Stroud showed the reserve champion turkey. Eleanor Pearson and Theressa Richardson exhibited the grand champion poultry pen. Reserve champion poultry was earned by Chloe Jordan and Lauren Neff. Naomi Sinnamon won grand champion waterfowl, and James Richardson took home the reserve champion waterfowl.
Abby Jordan earned $6.38 per pound, or $1,850, for her 290-pound grand champion barrow. The animal was purchased by Keith Miller Excavating, Dobbs Legal Group, Mooney Outdoor Enterprises, Beacon Credit Union, Kokomo Grain, Jim and Ruth Dyson, Maple and Tanner and Katelyn of Christner Pork.
The reserve champion barrow, sold by Kaelyn Shircliff, brought $5.36 per pound, or $1,350. Buyers included Edward Jones Investments, Don and Patty Wilson, Scot Shircliff, Dobbs Legal Group, and Ed and Joyce Wilson.
Wyatt Wilson earned grand champion with his gilt, and Kaelyn Shircliff won reserve champion gilt. The animals were not sold at the livestock auction.
Trent Burns won grand and reserve champion ewes. Grand champion market lamb was exhibited by Naomi Sinnamon, and reserve champion market lamb was shown by Britney Stroud. These sheep did not sell at the livestock auction.
Sale subtotals, by species, include: 5 beef and dairy feeder steers, $6,150; 10 beef and dairy steers, $15,852; 4 gallons of cow milk, $3,525; 9 goats, $5,680; 5 gallons of goat milk, $1,325; 13 poultry, $3,470; 5 rabbits, $1,400; 4 sheep, $3,150; and 69 swine, $45,955.
