USDA Forecasts Record Corn Yield

Corn production is forecast at 14.8 billion bushels, up 2 percent from August and up 2 percent from last year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 181.3 bushels per acre, up 2.9 bushels from the August forecast and up 4.7 bushels from 2017. If realized, this will be the highest yield on record for the United States.

Area harvested for grain is forecast at 81.8 million acres, unchanged from the August forecast, but down 1 percent from 2017.

Soybean production is forecast at a record 4.69 billion bushels, up 2 percent from August and up 7 percent from last year.

Based on Sept. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average a record high 52.8 bushels per acre, up 1.2 bushels from last month and up 3.7 bushels from last year.

Indiana

Indiana's corn yield is forecast at 192 bushels per acre, up 12 bushels from 2017 and up 6 bushels from the August forecast. If realized this will be a new record yield. Total production is forecast at 944.6 million bushels, up 1 percent from a year ago.

Soybean yield in Indiana is forecast at 60 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from last year and up 2 bushels from last month. If realized this will be a new record yield. Total production is forecast at 370.8 million bushels, up 16 percent from last year.

Michigan

The average corn yield in Michigan is expected to be 165 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from 2017 and up 7 bushels from the August forecast. If realized, this will be a new record yield.

For soybeans, a yield of 49 bushels per acre is expected, up 6.5 bushels from last year and up 3 bushels from last month's estimate.

Sugarbeet producers expect a yield of 30.4 tons per acre, up .4 tons from last month and up 5.2 tons per acre from 2017.
