Ideal Weather Good for Harvest

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Sept. 16.

Nearly ideal weather last week allowed harvest to kick off for some producers. Warm temperatures with little rainfall was conducive to harvest for those growers with crops ready for the combine.

Growers not beginning harvest last week were anticipated to begin soon. Weather was also excellent for hay harvest.

The average temperature for the week was 69.6 degrees, 2.4 degrees above normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from none to .28 inches during the week.

The statewide average precipitation was .15 inches.

There were 4.9 days available for fieldwork.

Last week was an excellent week for harvest. Growers continued to harvest hay, processing vegetables, silage, seed corn and began corn and soybean harvests.

There was some reported flooding along the Ohio River. Several hundred acres of crops in Spencer County were under water. That flooding was due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon.

Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 1 percent; short, 7 percent; adequate, 80 percent; surplus, 12 percent.

Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 1 percent; short, 7 percent; adequate, 82 percent; surplus, 10 percent.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2017 and 5-year average) showed: corn dented, 94, 86, 85, 85; corn mature, 61, 40, 37, 38; corn harvested for grain, 7, 2, 4, 4; corn harvested for silage, 79, 57, 51, NA: soybeans dropping leaves, 63, 41, 41, 43; soybean harvested, 2, NA, 2, 2: winter wheat dianted 4, 1, 2, 2: alfalfa hay, third cutting, 95, 90, NA, NA; alfalfa hay, fourth cutting, 48, 32, 51, NA; other hay, third cutting, 5, 76, NA, NA; other hay, fouth cutting, 20, 5, NA, NA.
