Corn Planting Advances to 84%

Published: Friday, June 21, 2019

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending June 16.

Farmers were able to make planting progress during a dry window midweek. However, heavy rain events at the beginning and end of the week kept soil moisture levels high, with reports of ponding in some fields.

The average temperature for the week was 64.9 degrees Fahrenheit, 5.9 degrees below normal for the state.

The amount of rainfall varied from .06 inches to 5.68 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 2.32 inches.

There were 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork.

Corn and soybean planting progressed as fields dried out during the week, but cold nights slowed growth in some fields. As the window for corn planting began to close, farmers made tough choices about what to do next; try to plant their remaining corn acreage as corn, switch those acres to another crop, or take the prevent plant payment.

Winter wheat conditions remained mostly unchanged, and harvest began in some areas.

Hay cutting continued to progress behind schedule. Livestock on pastures were reportedly enjoying heavy forage growth.

Other activities for the week included sidedressing corn, spraying for weeds, and talking with crop insurance agents.

Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 0 percent; short, 2 percent; adequate, 53 percent; surplus, 45 percent.

Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 0 percent; short, 1 percent; adequate, 56 percent; surplus, 43 percent.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2018 and 5-year average) showed: corn, planted 84, 67, 100, 100; corn, emerged 61, 35, 99, 95; soybeans, planted 64, 42, 98, 94; soybeans, emerged 38, 19, 93, 85; winter wheat, headed 94, 89, 99, 98; winter wheat, mature 27, 7, 46, 41; winter wheat, harvested 4, NA, 5, 8; alfalfa hay, first cutting 51, 38, 93, 88; other hay, first cutting 55, 42, 83, 80.
