Hahn, Hall of Fame Auctioneer, Dies

Hall of fame auctioneer and former Elkhart County 4-H Fair board member Roger E. Hahn, 93, of Nappanee, died July 6 at Goshen Hospital.

Mr. Hahn graduated from the Missouri Auction School in 1963. He then started Hahn Auctions and auctioneered for over 50 years. At one time, there were three generations of the Hahn family involved in auctioneering. In 1991, Hahn was inducted into the Indiana Auctioneers Hall of Fame. He was awarded a lifetime membership in the Indiana Auctioneers Assn.

He raised registered Holstein cows and Hampshire pigs for many years. He was a member of Elkhart County Holstein Assn. and Elkhart County Farm Bureau Inc. He was on the Elkhart County 4-H Fair board for 27 years and served as the dairy director at the fair during this time.

The Hahn family was chosen to be the Farm Family of the Year in 1963 by the Elkhart County Agricultural Society and later was named the Elkhart County 4-H Family of the Year.

During the 1980s, Hahn served on the Elkhart County planning commission.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1926 in Wakarusa. On Oct. 6, 1946, he married Virginia Mishler. She died Dec. 4, 1985. He married Louise Sletten in 1986. She survives.

Other survivors include four sons, Phil, Dave and Todd, all of Nappanee, and Tim of Sandford, Mich.; a daughter, Holly Yoder of Leesburg; two stepsons, John Sletten of Dayton, Ohio and Peter Sletten of Colorado; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Bowers; and one brother, Larry.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John, and one sister, Virginia Treesh.

Hahn was a 1944 graduate of Wakarusa High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Union Center Church of the Brethren for 49 years.

Memorial contributions may be given to Heifer Project International, Nappanee Boys and Girls Club or Elkhart County 4-H Fair Foundation.
