Indiana Corn, Bean Yields Down

Corn production for grain is forecast at 13.8 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 4 percent from last year, according to the National Agriculture Statistics Service.

Based on condition as of Oct. 1, yields are expected to average 168.4 bushels per harvested acre, up .2 bushel from the previous forecast but down 8 bushels from 2018.

Acres harvested for grain is forecast at 81.8 million acre, down less than 1 percent from previous forecast but up slightly from 2018.

Soybean production for beans is forecast at 3.55 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the previous forecast and down 20 percdent from last year.

Based on conditions as of Oct. 1, yields are expected to average 46.9 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from the previous forecast and down 3.7 bushels from 2018.

Area harvested for beans in the United State is forecast at 75.6 million acres, down less than 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 14 percent from 2018.

Indiana

Indiana corn and soybean production is expected to be down significantly from last year, according to Greg Matli, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.

Indiana corn yield is expected to be 162 bushels per acre, 27 bushels lower than last year's yield. Total production is expected to be 794 million bushels, down 19 percent from 2018. If realized, this will be the lowest Indiana corn production since 2012.

Indiana soybean production is expected to total 258 million bushels, down 25 percent from a year earlier. The yield is forecast at 48 bushels per acre, down 9.5 bushels from 2018. If realized, this will be the lowest yield since 2012.

Michigan

Highly variable crops have Michigan farmers bracing for a potentially rough harvest, according to Marlo Johnson, director, USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office.

Michigan corn production is forecast at 270 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year. If realized, this will be the lowest production since 2004.
