Worst Part of Virus Crisis: 'Crazy Routine'

Published: Friday, March 27, 2020

Social distancing is affecting nearly everyone in some way, shape or form. For the next eight weeks, we are featuring people who are experiencing a new normal as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

This week's "Person You Should Know" is Heather Goss, FFA advisor at Fairfield High School. Like everyone else, she and other FFA advisors are adjusting to teaching from home. Below, she discusses how her life has changed during the past two weeks.

Family: Fiance, Skylar, and two dogs.

My life before social isolation: Wake up, eat breakfast, go to the gym, teach in my classroom, spend time with my students, participate in FFA events, drive the mini bus, plan activities with my officers, grade papers, and grade some more papers, spend time with my dogs and Skylar.

My new normal: Wake up, eat breakfast, check my computer, check it again and again, work out at home, play with my dogs, plan online learning activities, try to read a book but distracted by Oliver (one of the dogs), stay away from stores and other people.

What I miss the most from my regular routine: A routine. I love routine and now, it is a crazy new routine and I don't like it. I miss my daily conversations with co-workers, students and student interaction in the classroom. I miss spending my Saturdays at livestock judging contests and preparing for District Leadership Contest.

Advice to others experiencing social isolation: Being out of a routine is hard, but the most important part is to spend this time with those who matter the most to you. This is a time to reflect on life and appreciate life and all that you have been given and the opportunities that you have. My favorite quote to follow in this time: "The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart."—Helen Keller

My best guess on when life will return to normal: Right now, we are trying to find a new "normal" in life daily, as we navigate the unknown. It is hard to guess when normality will return. I hope by May 1 we will be back to normal and be able to get into our routine of life.
