Homestead Dairy in Plymouth has been honored as the 2021 Innovative Dairy Farmers of the Year by the International Dairy Foods Assn. and Dairy Herd Management.

The award, announced in DHM's Dec. 30 online edition, recognizes farm co-owners Brian and Jill Houin, along with 14 family members and more than 30 non-family employees, for their use of innovative technology to achieve productivity, sustainability and high quality of life for their cows and employees.

Homestead Dairy has one of the largest robotic milking systems in the country. They also use automatic calf feeders, genomic testing and a methane digester that generates electricity from cow manure.

The dairy farm was nominated for this award by the American Dairy Assn. of Indiana.

"Our Hoosier dairy farmers across the state embrace technology to help them to care for their animals, their land and community every single day," said Jenni Browning, CEO of ADAI. "We are so proud to have the Houin family and Homestead Dairy recognized for their unique approach to incorporating so many different advances on their farm, and their willingness to share their findings with universities and the agriculture community at large."
