Tippy Valley FFA Forestry Team Captures State Title

Published: Friday, January 22, 2021

A year after placing in the top 10, the four-student Tippecanoe Valley FFA forestry judging team was crowned state champions.

The Viking team of Jesse Scott, Lucas Parson, Ashton Irwin and Isaac Shafer prevailed over more than 100 other teams comprised of 500-plus individual participants in the FFA division of the state competition held in late December.

Scott was the top individual finisher and Parson placed fifth.

Team members had to identify 35 different species of leaves, 10 seeds, five woods and 10 diseases as well as take a written test on forestry management.

This is the Tippecanoe Valley FFA forestry judging team's first state title since FFA adviser Michael Jones began coaching it 21 years ago.

"They are a great young group of kids to work with because after being in the top 10 last year as a team they worked there tails off to come back this year and be the top team," Jones said in an email. "They did a great job of practicing on their own time to get better and helping each other get better."

Other Tippecanoe Valley FFA members participating were Dawson Ault and Skyler Flippo.
