Variable Rainfall Seen in Indiana

Published: Friday, June 18, 2021

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending June 13.

Crop conditions remained stable despite inconsistencies in rainfall. Soil moisture levels decreased slightly from the previous week, with 80 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 76.8 degrees F, 6.9 degrees above normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from .09 to 2.28 inches. The statewide average precipitation was 1.22 inches.

There were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork.

Inconsistent rainfall across the state resulted in varied soil moisture. Scattered showers in northern Indiana kept crop conditions stable but did little to replenish subsoil moisture levels. More rain was needed to prevent stress in corn.

Regular rain and occasional flooding in southern Indiana resulted in saturated fields and slowed hay harvesting for some. Corn and soybean emergence neared completion and remained ahead of average.

Crop conditions remained stable across the state. Growers continued to apply fungicides to wheat, as needed. Hay harvesting conditions were ideal for areas that experienced warm, dry weather.

Livestock enjoyed stable pasture conditions, with 70 percent of pastures rated in good to excellent condition.

Other activities for the week included hay harvesting, herbicide application, fertilizer spraying and installation of livestock fencing.

Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 4 percent; short, 16 percent; adequate, 66 percent; surplus, 14 percent.

Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 5 percent; short, 16 percent; adequate, 68 percent; surplus, 11 percent.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2020 and 5-year average) showed: corn emerged, 96, 88, 93, 84; soybeans planted, 96, 92, 93, 86; soybeans emerged, 88, 78, 83, 71; winter wheat headed, 96, 93, 95, 96; winter wheat mature, 27, 15, 25, 34; winter wheat harvested, 1, 0, 3, 5; alfalfa hay, first cutting, 88, 78, 85, 80; other hay, first cutting, 80, 69, 77, 71.
