The Kosciusko County 4-H Sale of Champions raised $41,132 last Friday in Warsaw. With 13 lots selling, the event kicked off the annual 4-H livestock auction.

The top-selling animal from the sale was Presley Zehring's grand champion beef steer. The Leesburg youth and fourth-year 4-H'er earned $10,325 ($7.51 per pound) from a group of supporters. The Maine-Anjou steer weighed 1,375 pounds.

Nash Bouse, also of Leesburg, auctioned his 1,210-pounds reserve champion beef steer for $5,870 ($4.85 per pound) to friends, family and supporters. Nash also exhibited the grand champion barrow, which did not sell.

The reserve champion barrow was exhibited by Haley Nelson of Mentone. She received $6,225 ($23.67 per pound) from supporters. The hog weighed 263 pounds.

Two highlights of the event were the royalty kisses featuring 4-H queen Arrington Krull and 4-H king Cameron Zimmerman, both of Milford. During her turn in the auction ring, Krull generated laughs with her "pre-kiss COVID requirements." This involved marking the spot where the highest bidder would stand—6 feet apart from herself, then spraying disinfectant and putting on a mask and rubber gloves.

The high bid reached $2,800, with the proceeds split between the goat and beef barns.

The queen's grandfather, Hubert Krull, came forward and stood on the designated spot. Arrington and her grandfather then reached out their hands to have a "socially distanced" high five. After the laughter subsided, Hubert and his wife Beth hugged Arrington exchange hugs and received their much-anticipated royalty kisses.

Next up was Zimmerman, who played up his mullet in an effort to generate more money for the swine barn. Eventually, a buyer group paid $2,705, with Cameron's mother, Peg, receiving the kiss.

Two goats were offered for sale in the Sale of Champions. Sydney Petersen of Mentone earned $4,500 from the sale of her grand champion specialty market goat. Tucker Shriver of Claypool received $1,755 for his grand champion dairy market goat. Both animals were purchased by support groups.

Isaiah Wilson of Mentone also sold a basket of products from his grand champion milking doe for $1,500.

In poultry, Noah Richardson of Mentone earned $1,350 for the grand champion meat ducks. Addie Pulley of Pierceton sold her grand champion meat chickens for $1,000. Lucas Vargo of Mentone received $650 for the grand champion turkey.

In rabbits, Elizabeth Schmidt, a 10-year 4-H'er from Leesburg, auctioned off her grand champion meat pen for $1,650. Taylor Estepp of Claypool was next with the reserve champion meat pen. The rabbits brought $802.

No sheep or dairy animals were featured in the auction. All will be shown at the Indiana State Fair. Tucker Curtis exhibited the grand champion Holstein. Justin Beer showed the grand champion market lamb, and Landon Bewley had the reserve lamb.

Beer also exhibited the grand champion dairy steer. His brother Jace had the reserve dairy steer.

The grand champion dairy calf feeder steer was exhibited by Taelyn Tom. The reserve champion dairy feeder calf was brought by Justin Beer.

An online auction continues this week to allow for add-ons. Final numbers from the auction will be available at a later time.
