Cold, Wet Weather Delays Harvest

Published: Friday, November 26, 2021

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 21.

Harvest progressed last week but was hampered in some areas due to cold, wet field conditions.

Soil moisture levels were nearly the same as the previous week, with 96 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 40.2 degrees F, 1.9 degrees below normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from none to 1.40 inches over the week.

The statewide average precipitation was .64 inches, .08 inches below normal.

There were 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork.

Corn and soybean harvest both moved closer toward their respective five-year averages, but still remained slightly behind schedule. Farmers in some areas were waiting for drier soils or the ground to freeze before they finished harvest.

Farmers that had finished harvest turned their attention to fall tillage and fertilizer applications.

Livestock were moved to winter pastures with supplemental feed.

Other activities for the week included hauling grain, marketing livestock and fall equipment maintenance.

The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2020 and 5-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 17, 17, 17, N/A; soybeans harvested, 14, 14, N/A, N/A.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2020 and 5-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 91, 85, 96, 92; soybeans harvested, 94, 88, 100, 96; winter wheat planted, 96, 92, 99, 97; winter wheat emerged, 85, 75, 90, 88.
