$15,000 Steer Leads Kosciusko 4-H Auction

by Jerry Goshert

Published: Friday, July 21, 2017

Kosciusko County 4-H'ers earned $417,987.41 on 478 lots during last Friday's annual livestock auction in Warsaw. That total compares with $418,950.41 the 4-H'ers earned from last year's event. This year's auction saw 38 fewer lots than last year.

The day featured buying and selling throughout the morning and afternoon. All of the grand and reserve champion animals were reserved for Friday night's Sale of Champions.

Highlighting that event was the sale of the grand champion beef steer. Collin Deatsman of Leesburg, a first year 4-H'er, continued a Deatsman family tradition of showing and selling grand champion beef cattle. Collin's father, Brian, showed the grand champion steer 20 years ago, and his grandfather, Max Deatsman, showed the winner 44 years ago.

Last Friday, Collin cashed in big time when over 40 buyers (see list at end of story) paid him $15,000, or $11.24 cents per pound. The steer weighed 1,335 pounds.

The reserve champion in the beef show was a 1,295-pounder owned by Riley Shepherd of Leesburg. Riley sold the steer for $10,600, or $8.18 per pound, to friends and family (see list).

In swine, the grand champion barrow was shown by Ashton Stookey of Leesburg. The eight-year 4-H'er sold his 282-pound swine animal for $2,245, or $7.96 per pound, to Friends of Ashton Stookey, which include Sam Beer Farms Inc., GreenMark Equipment, Brian Wuthrich Auctioneer, Stookey Showpigs and Danny O'Haver family.

First-year 4-H'er Nash Bouse, of Mentone, brought the reserve champion barrow, which weighed 276 pounds and sold for $5,925, or $21.47 per pound, to friends and family (see list).

Leading the way in the dairy beef sale was Hunter Magiera of Syracuse and his 1,615-pound steer. The 10-year 4-H'er sold it for $6,000, or $3.71 per pound, to a buyer group (see list). The reserve champion dairy steer, which weighed 1,380 pounds, was exhibited by Makenna Sausaman of Syracuse. She sold the steer for $3,200, or $2.32 per pound, to friends and family (see list).

Hunter Magiera also serves as this year's 4-H fair king, and as such he sold a kiss to raise money for the 4-H dairy barn. A buyer group led by county Extension director Kelly Heckaman (see list) paid $2,150 for the kiss and then selected a junior princess, Lucy Andrew, and Hunter's grandmother, Marie Tom, to perform the honor of receiving the royalty kisses.

Four-H queen Lacey Helfers, a nine-year 4-H'er from Leesburg, sold a kiss for $1,600 to a support group (see list), with the proceeds going toward the 4-H junior leader memorial garden and the royalty committee.

The grand champion market lamb owned by Jordyn Leininger of Pierceton did not sell, as he plans to show the lamb at the Indiana State Fair. The reserve champion lamb shown by Jared Beer of Milford sold for $2,200, or $15.83 per pound, to CFS Milford, Clunette Elevator Co., Deatsman Grain Farm, Lake City Bank, Polk Equipment, and Gary Bailey with Schrader Real Estate and Auction. The lamb weighed 139 pounds.

In goats, Jackson Templin of Leesburg brought the grand champion specialty market animal. A support group consisting of friends and family (see list) paid an impressive $9,285 for the 90-pounder.

Ethan Moore of Warsaw was next with the grand champion dairy market goat. The goat fetched $1,550 from John T. Camden Construction, Chore-Time Brock, Zolman Farms, Brock and Gwen Ostrom, Shawn Krull family, Kosciusko County Farm Bureau, E.F. The Sale of Champions also did not feature any milk. Sydney Day of North Manchester showed the grand champion Jersey, which did not appear, and Ethan Moore exhibited the grand champion senior doe but could sell only one item in the champions event.
