Corn Harvest Two-Thirds Finished

Published: Friday, November 17, 2017

The following is from the Michigan Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 12.

Snow accumulation in some northern Michigan locations restricted harvest activities. Further south, slightly drier conditions allowed some producers to recommence harvesting on certain fields.

Corn for grain harvest was slowed due to wet grounds again. The snow, rain, and cold temperatures also hindered soybean harvest.

Dry bean harvest was coming to an end while sugarbeet harvest was halted by cold weekend temperatures.

Winter wheat continued to emerge in mostly good conditions in some areas. In other areas of the state, the winter wheat crop was negatively affected by excessive moisture.

Fieldwork activities were few and far between, but included preparing equipment for winter storage, wrapping up harvest, and fall tillage in areas in which it was permissible.

There were 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2016 and 5-year average) showed: corn harvested, 69, 57, 68, 70; soybeans harvested, 88, 84, 85, 92; winter wheat planted, 99, 96, 94, 98; winter wheat emerged, 93, 88, 84, 88; dry beans harvested, 98, 94, 95, 99; alfalfa hay, third cutting, 93, 92, 100, NA; alfalfa hay, fourth cutting, 68, 66, 75, NA; other hay, third cutting, 86, 84, 90, NA; other hay, fourth cutting, 39, 34, 48, NA; sugarbeets harvested, 85, 65, 81, 90.
