George Myer to Be Remembered

Published: Friday, March 16, 2018

The 2018 Ag Days will be bittersweet for the Agriculture Team of St Joseph County. One of the co-chairmen for many years, George Myer, passed away in February, and the event will be dedicated to his outstanding commitment.

The Ag Team is busy preparing for the event, which will be held at the fairgrounds in South Bend on April 6-8. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m on Sunday. This year the featured product will be corn—all kinds of corn—sweet corn, field corn, seed corn, maize, Indiana corn.

This is a free family event and is meant to teach children where farm products originate. It is an interactive event where the children will see sheep, goats, pigs, beef, rabbits and poultry and will pick an apple from the apple tree, gather an egg from the henhouse, milk a cow, get their picture taken, and generally have a good time. At each station they will put an example of the farm product in their basket and then "sell" it at the market for a cookie and milk. This simulates the way the farm industry works.

Gleaner Life Insurance will have an Easter Egg hunt on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., also at the fairgrounds (Nature Center area). Children up to age 12 are invited to come and enjoy the hunt. There will be a small gift for the children and door prizes.

There will be a pedal pull for ages 5 through 10 on Saturday; signup begins at 2 p.m. and the pull will begin at 3.
