Stoll, Knowles Win Tractor Driving Contest

The Elkhart County 4-H farm and garden tractor clubs held their annual contest on May 5 at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds. Total scores from a written test, parts identification and driving through an obstacle course were compiled to determine the winners in each age category.

The first and second place winners in each category will represent Elkhart County in the Area 10 contest and compete against winners from Kosciusko, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Porter, St. Joseph and Starke counties in June. The top three participants at the area contest will compete at the Indiana State Fair in August.

In the agriculture tractor division, Trevor Stoll, Elkhart was the senior champion, and Nathan Martin, Goshen, was the senior reserve champion. Lane Brenneman, Elkhart, was the junior champion and Cole Brenneman, Elkhart, was the junior reserve champion.

Winners in the garden tractor competition include, senior champion, Jeff Knowles, Elkhart, and senior reserve champion, Andrew Miller, Goshen. The junior winners include champion, Gage Garber, Goshen, and reserve champion, Paige Jacobs, Nappanee.

The garden tractor club will be sending two individuals from Elkhart County who will compete in the Zero Turn Radius division. Sam Yoder from New Paris was the champion and his brother Sawyer was the reserve champion.

Training and experience received in the 4-H farm and garden tractor project is invaluable to youth in many future careers. The safety and maintenance skills learned apply in operating all kinds of machinery, even the family car.
