$418,686 Raised at Kosy Fair Auction

Published: Friday, July 20, 2018

The Kosciusko County 4-H livestock auction saw 495 lots bring $418,686.47 last Friday in Warsaw. Combined with $6,702.60 in add-ons, the grand total reached an impressive $425,389.07.

Though not a record, this year's auction raised more money ($7,401.66) and animals (17) than 2017's 4-H fundraiser.

"Overall, we had a great sale because of tremendous and generous support from the community," said Kelly Heckaman, Kosciusko County Extension director. "All market prices were down for all livestock, but we still had an increase over last year's sale."

The record, from 2014, remains $437,674.79.

The 4-H auction took place all day, with all grand and reserve champions selling during the Sale of Champions at night.

One of the auction highlights was the sale of the grand champion beef steer, exhibited by Andon Zehring of Leesburg. The steer, weighing 1,385 pounds, brought $15,700 ($11.33 per pound) and was purchased by family and friends (see list at end of story).

Another highlight of the evening was the royalty kiss. This year's fair queen, Madelyn Zimmerman, sold a kiss to a support group (see list) for the pricey sum of $3,115.65. Madelyn's father, John Zimmerman, received the kiss from his 17-year-old daughter. Proceeds from the queen's kiss will go to the John Anglin Memorial Show Arena and the Beaver Dam 4-H club.

On the reserve champion beef steer, shown by Collin Deatsman of Leesburg, the gavel fell at $8,525 ($6.24 per pound). The animal was purchased by a support group (see list).

Jackson Templin of Leesburg was a big winner at this year's fair. In addition to serving as 2018 fair king, the eight-year 4-H'er also exhibited the grand champion market lamb. The 130-pound lamb fetched a bid of $9,035, which equates to $69.50 per pound. The buyer included friends and family (see list)

As fair king, he sold a kiss to raise money for the 4-H beef barn. The kiss brought $2,250, courtesy of a support group (see list). The buyer selected Templin's girlfriend, Reagan Rowland, to receive the kiss.

Mallory Bowers of Warsaw exhibited the 133-pound reserve champion lamb and received $3,500 ($26.31 per pound) from a support group (see list).

In swine, Emma Patrick of Warsaw led the way with her grand champion barrow. The 271-pounder brought $6,500 ($23.98 per pound) from friends and family (see list).

Allie Ayers of Warsaw received strong support on the sale of her reserve champion barrow. The 283-pounder sold for $11,885 ($41.99 per pound), courtesy of a support group (see list).

The grand champion dairy feeder steer was exhibited by Jared Beer of Milford. His 616-pound calf was auctioned for $2,525 to Clunette Elevator, Polk Equipment, Deatsman Grain Farm, Lake City Bank and CFS Milford.

In goats, Asher Meyer of Warsaw sold his grand champion dairy market wether for $2,500 to a support group (see list). First-year 4-H'er Jaden Moneyheffer of Akron earned $1,550 from the sale of his grand champion specialty market goat. The high bid came from a support group (see list).

Another first-year 4-H'er, Jason Moore of Warsaw, stepped up to sell milk from his grand champion senior doe. The basket of milk brought $1,300 from friends and family (see list).

In poultry, Cassie Garber of Warsaw led the way with her grand champion market turkey. It sold for $3,000 to a support group (see list).

Evan Yoder of Warsaw presented his grand champion market duck for sale. A support group (see list) had the high bid at $2,800.

The grand champion broilers, shown by Kimber McSherry of Claypool, were auctioned for $1,395. The buyer's group included the Kosciusko County 4-H Poultry Committee, C and S Lawn Care, Etna Elevator, Arby's 15, G and G Excavating, Van Contracting, Ceres Solutions Co-op, Jen Cook, Chore-Time Brock, Zeke McSherry, Jon and Tina Goon, Travis and Gail Roberts, Marissa McSherry, Keith and Shannon McSherry, Hall and Marose Silveus/Dan Woods, Kevin and Marsha McSherry, Rob and Amy Seewald family, Jeff and Christy Polk.

The Sale of Champions also featured two rabbit pens. The grand champion meat pen was exhibited by Stephanie Bauman of Pierceton. She earned $450 from Andrea Baker, Ben's Excavating Service LLC, Mike Kissinger, R and B Car Co., Tim Mallot, Rochelle, Thad and Jordyn Leininger, Tim and Janet Moore, and A+ Yard Service.

The reserve champion meat pen brought $1,600 and was sold by Katie Schmidt of Warsaw. The buyer's group included Monteith Tire, Tom Farms, Leesburg Mighty Farmers, 1st Source Bank, Diamond S, Dave and Angie Jarrett, Joel and Karla Shepherd, Rob and Amy Seewald, Duane and Rickell Kline, Gerrie Schmidt, Judy Schmidt, Bill and Katie Byer, Leo Sahlhoff, Scissors Hair Salon, Betty's Cake and Candy Shop, Ramsey and Wiggins, Pastor Greg and Carol Hiatt, Edward Jones, Browers Carpet, Bussard Auto Care, Dennis and Pam Polk, Dustin and Rhonda Davis, Marsha Yocum, Hoffman Simplicity Outdoor Equipment, Fred and Rita Lemert, Steve and Tracie Hawblitzel, Helen Schmidt, Sharon Schmidt, John and Loretta Schmidt, Brittany Schmidt, Patrick and Alyssa Ryan, and Evan Schmidt.

Swine led the way in receipts, with 104 animals selling for $107,356.32. Twenty-five beef steers brought $84,816.65, and 150 poultry pens raised $51,496. Other sale categories included: 41 dairy feeder steers, $44,225; 47 dairy lots, $39,185; 28 sheep, $31,931.50; 61 goats, $29,957; 10 dairy steers, $20,055.95; 27 rabbit pens, $11,000; 1 king's kiss, $2,250; and 1 queen's kiss, $3,115.65.
