Allegan Co. 4-H Auction Exceeds $600,000

The Allegan County 4-H livestock auction generated more than $600,000 last Wednesday at the Allegan County Fair in Allegan. Strong support came in the swine and beef sales, with steers bringing an average of $2.77 per pound and hogs selling for an average of $3.35 per pound. The grand total from all species was $602,680.20, which was down from last year's record of $689,003.85.

One of the big winners was Elizabeth Williams, who exhibited the grand champion beef steer and grand champion lamb. The Allegan youth sold the 1,354-pound Maine-Anjou steer for $5.25 per pound, or $7,108.50, to A&B Farms. She then auctioned the 132-pound lamb for $5.50 per pound, or $726, to The Grocery Outlet Store.

The reserve champion in the beef show was a 1,322-pound crossbred exhibited by Bryce Jipping of Hamilton. Macatawa Radiant paid $3.25 per pound, or $4,296.50.

Gavin Gouker of Allegan led the way in the beef carcass show. He sold the grand champion for $5.25 per pound, or $3,753.75, to Waanders Concrete Co. Stephanie Harvey sold the reserve champion beef carcass for $4.50 per pound, or $3,694.50, to VanderKolk Cattle Co.

In the swine show, Brayden Jipping of Hamilton sold the grand champion barrow for an impressive $15.50 per pound, or $4,386.50. The buyer of the 283-pound crossbred was Beck's Seed and the Wildt family. Bryce Ostrom of Dorr sold the 283-pound reserve champion barrow for $5.25 per pound, or $1,485.75, to Farm Bureau Insurance, Mark Hop Agency.

Mason Boeskool of Hamilton earned $8 per pound from the sale of the grand champion gilt. Schutter Brothers Builders paid $2,216 for the 277-pounder. Morgan Sturman of Allegansold the 255-pound reserve champion gilt for $5 per pound, or $1,275, to Salmon Environmental.

The grand champion swine carcass was exhibited by Madison Cavanaugh of Hopkins. Antkoviak and Antkoviak PC had the high bid at $3.75 per pound, or $678.75. The same buyer purchased the reserve champion swine carcass belonging to Caleb Tucker of Hopkins. The price was $4.75 per pound, or $850.25.

Caleb Tucker also captured the grand champion banner in the dairy steer show. Last Wednesday, he sold the 1,400-pound steer for $2.25 per pound, or $3,150, to Brightside Church of Hopkins. Abigail Timmer sold the reserve champion dairy steer for $2.25 per pound, or $3,100.50, to Cripps Fontaine.

In dairy starter calves, Bryce Ostrom of Dorr auctioned his grand champion calf for $3.75 per pound, or $2,370, to Brenner Excavating. Katrina Tucker of Hopkins sold the reserve champion dairy calf for $2.75 per pound, or $1,465.75, to Farmers Co-op Elevator Co.

In the gallon of milk sale, 4-H dairy youths collected donations totaling $16,950. One of the big supporters was Schaendorf Custom Farming. Logan Welch exhibited three breed champions, including the Holstein, Brown Swiss and AOB (any other breed). Trenton Nagelkirk showed the grand champion Jersey.

In sheep, McKenna Modreske of Wayland led the way in the ewe show. She sold the grand champion for $9 per pound, or $1,215, to Willow Creek Club Lambs. Mary Mulder auctioned the reserve champion ewe for $9 per pound, or $1,296, to Dawtor Enterprises.

Rylee Verhelle sold the reserve champion wether for $3 per pound, or $414, to Burnips Equipment.

The grand champion lamb carcass was shown by Katrina Tucker of Hopkins and sold for $4 per pound, or $304, to Farm Bureau Insurance, Mark Hop Agency. Stephanie Harvey sold the reserve champion carcass for $5.50, or $495, to Burnips Equipment.

In goats, Alex Hiemstra of Dorr exhibited the grand champion dairy wether. Pickle Street Veterinary Service had the high bid at $5 per pound, or $440. Riley Williams sold the reserve champion dairy wether for $5 per pound, or $515, to Taplin Group.

For $7 per pound, Bryce Ostrom of Dorr unloaded the grand champion non-dairy wether to Burnips Equipment Co. McKenna Modreske sold her reserve non-dairy wether for $6 per pound, or $504, to A&B Farms.

Curtis Flokstra of Allegan received $9 per pound, or $432, for the grand champion goat carcass. The buyer was Henry Klein. Alex Hiemstra returned to sell his reserve champion goat carcass for $3 per pound, or $129, to Moline Co-op.

There was one turkey lot offered for sale. Jordan Beers of Dorr sold her grand champion turkeys for $14 per pound, or $459.20, to Rabbit River Transport.

In chickens, Jordan Beers led the way once again with the grand champion roasters. She sold them for $9 per pound, or $282.60, to Lite Load Services. Standing in second place was Anderson Bukrey, who received $12, or $304.80, from Miller Creek Farm.

Kyle Mitchell of Allegan picked up $30 per pound, or $336, from Monterey Veterinary Center for the grand champion broiler pen.

In rabbits, Jenna Naber of Holland sold the grand champion meat pen for $20 per pound, or $252, to Modreske Fencing. Mallory Zenk also received $20 per pound, or $264, for the reserve champion meat pen. The buyer was Ronal P. Hough of Kalamazoo.

In other sales, the Allegan County 4-H livestock judging team raised $7,900 from the sale of a print, as well as donations, to cover expenses relating to their participation in an upcoming national contest.

Sale subtotals, by species, are: swine, $247,941.75; beef, $242,773; sheep, $34,661.75; dairy calves, $27,608.50; gallon of milk, $16,950; dairy steers, $8,103; livestock judging team, $7,900; rabbits, $4,463.20; chickens, $1,189.80; and turkeys, $459.20.
