Grand Barrow Leads Elkhart 4-H Auction

Led by the grand champion barrow, the 2019 Elkhart County 4-H livestock auction exceeded the $1 million mark for the seventh straight year. With 1,039 lots, total sales from last Friday's event in Goshen amounted $1,145,599.09. That's down slightly from last year's effort of $1,203,659.20.

Allie Yoder, a second-year 4-H'er from Nappanee, drove her 268-pound barrow to victory in the swine show. During last Friday's auction, she sold the Yorkshire hog for a record $75 per pound ($20,100) to a support group (see list at end of story). The previous record, from 2018, was $57 per pound.

The reserve champion barrow, shown by Kylin Wuthrich of Nappanee, brought $23.75 per pound ($6,745). Buyers of the 284-pound crossbred included family and friends (see list).

In the beef auction, Brock Flickinger of Wakarusa led the way with his 1,375-pound grand champion steer. Buyers (see list) paid $8.75 per pound, netting him $12,031.25.

Next was the reserve champion beef steer shown by Ashlee Bish of Ligonier. She earned $5 per pound ($6,750) from a support group (see list). The steer weighed $1,350 pounds.

Last Friday's auction began with sheep, and the first animal offered for sale was the grand champion market lamb shown by Riley Graber of Goshen. The 10-year 4-H'er sold the 133-pound wether for an impressive $85 per pound ($11,305). Among the buyers were her parents, Tim and Amy Graber, as well as a support group consisting of Brent and Toni Warren, Darren Miller, Dr. Jody Neer, Mark Rayburn, Goshen Health Systems, Millmark Industries, Hometown Hog Feeds and Shipshewana Auction.

Another Goshen youth, Megan Kelly, received a record price for her reserve champion market lamb. The high bid on Kelly's 135-pound wether was $75 per pound ($10,125). She sold it to Michiana Agra, Martin Builder LLC, David Kauffman/Edward Jones, Cushwa family, K.P. and Mindy Bernicky, First State Bank, White Veterinary Hospital, Mark and Karla Rayburn, Grandma and Grandpa Klein, and Grandma and Grandpa Kelly.

For the grand champion pen of lambs, Brandt Sark of New Paris received $10 per pound for the pen weighing 227 pounds ($2,270). Buyers included Larry and Linda Moorman, Sorg Dodge, Hostetler Door, Thompson Livestock, Milford Animal Clinic, Sark Club Lambs, Tim and Cathy Hoogenboom, CandP Oil, Millersburg Animal Clinic and New Paris-Benton Boosters.

The reserve champion pen of lambs was shown by Janissa Lehman of Topeka. The pen weighing 241 pounds brought $12 per pound, for a total price of $2,892. The buyers included Agronomic Solutions LLC, Wana Feed, Rain Guard, Genesis Club Lambs, Millersburg Animal Clinic, Interra Credit Union, Matt and Dawn Ernsberger, Middlebury Animal Clinic, Terry and Melody Ernsberger, and Michiana Agra.

In dairy feeder calves, the grand champion was a 476-pounder exhibited by Brock Dunlap of New Paris. He earned $13.50 per pound ($6,426) from a support group (see list). The reserve champion dairy feeder calf was exhibited by Myla Miller of New Paris and sold for $5.50 per pound ($2,321). Buyers of the 422-pound calf were Edd's Supply, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance/Randy Yoder, The Anderson's, Stutzman Power Equipment, GreenMark, Fresh Solutions, Great Lakes Seed, Jake's Service, Iron Circle, Wilbur Ellis, Crist Heating and Cooling, Rite Choice, Milford Animal Clinic, Richmond's Feed and Scattered Acres.

Two siblings, Sage and Drake Risser of Goshen, captured the top prizes in the meat goat show. They sold their goats at the same time, earning $5,400 from a support group (see list). They split the proceeds, giving each of them $2,700.

The grand champion dairy market goat was shown by Kharece Barden of Elkhart. She received $2,475 from Barden Heating and Cooling, Kaeb Sales Inc., Larry Troyer, Gill and Mary Morgan, Yoder Carpets, Chris and Krystal Barden, Reynolds Auto Repair, MA Farms, Tina's Studio and Brandon's Custom Flooring.

Next was the reserve champion dairy wether belonging to Ashton Rice of Nappanee. The goat brought $1,025 from Fairland Farm/Greg and Dawn Birr, Hahn Auction, Interra, Tim and Brenda Rice, Hoover Lumber and Coal, Scott and Gretchen, Kristi Lindzy, Loucks and Weaver, Chris Taylor, Brian and Belinda Clayton, Roxie Rice, Pat Yoder, and Doug and Mindy Berger.

In the dairy auction, 4-H dairy champions sold baskets of dairy products to the highest bidder. Oliver Nisen of Leesburg exhibited two grand champions, including the top Holstein and the top Milking Shorthorn. He sold a basket of dairy products from his Holstein for $4,050 to Tri State Bovine Services, ADM, Clinton Center Feed, Polk Equipment, DVMS, Kirkdorffer Milk Transport, Ferguson Farms, Maurice and Dawn Kline, the Nisen family, Delaval, Herd Health Diagnostics, Jeff and Jennifer Leininger family, Kauffman Family Farm, Post family, Travis Luck/Tri State Crush/Wholesome Grain, Grandma's Pantry, anonymous, Ab Brown/State Farm, Arby's 15 - Warsaw, Stookeyholm LLC, Schoefernacker family, Custom Manure Hauling.

Nisen sold a dairy basket from his Milking Shorthorn for $1,240 to ADM/Clinton Center Feed, Polk Equipment, DVMS, Ferguson Farms, the Nisen family, Delaval, Kauffman Trucking, Post family, Travis Luke/Tri-State Crush/Wholesome Grain, anonymous, and D&M Automotive.

Kamryn Miller of LaGrange exhibited the grand champion Jersey and sold cheese for $3,000 to friends and family. The list includes Edward Jones of Middlebury, Dexter Axle, Chris and Tami Stout, River Woodworking, Riegsecker Cabinet Co., Del and Geneva Miller, Elvin and Marlene Delagrange, DVMS, the Blue Gate Restaurant, the Davis Mercantile, Elsie Miller Trust, Lolly's Fabrics, ADM/Clinton Center Feed, Jo Ward-Selman/Grateful Acres, Dana Bontrager Excavating and Clinton Center Feed.

Nicole Miller, also of LaGrange, sold a basket of reserve champion Jersey cheese for $2,800. Garrett Weldy of Elkhart sold a basket from his reserve champion Milking Shorthorn for $600. Buyers included Brown & Brown General Contractors, Interra Credit Union, DVMS, ADM, Clinton Center Feed and Friends of Garrett Weldy.

Ryan Blosser of Goshen was a big winner in the Ayrshire show, exhibiting both the grand and reserve champion cows. He is taking the grand champion to the state fair but sold a basket of cheese from the reserve for $1,900. His support group included Jet Technologies Inc., Tom Naquin Chevrolet, Dairy Veterinary and Management Services, Ayrlyn Ayrshires, Family and Friends of Ryan Blosser, and Curtis Christophel.

In Guernseys, cheese from the grand champion sold for $2,750 and was exhibited by Bryce Weaver of Goshen. His supporters included Dr. GW Snider, DVMS, Interra, Glen's Tire, Yoder Oil, Wakarusa Nutritional Services, Yellow Creek Gravel, Kaeb Sales, Ceres, Corner Stone Ag Management, Lauren Wenger, Ralph and Julia Kennell, Maurie and Dawn Kline, Todd and Tina Mast, Dairyland IBA, Golden Oak Jerseys, anonymous Friends of Bryce Weaver, Lyle and Carla Weaver, Beck's Hybrids and Knollbrook Farm.

James Schrock of Goshen sold a basket of reserve champion Guernsey cheese for $1,700 to Kaeb Sales, Wakarusa Ag LLC, Wakarusa Nutritional Service, Hoover Automotive, Interra Credit Union, Lois Schrock, Amy Schrock, Roger Schrock, Dr. Hank Keller, Jeff Fervida, Cornerstone Auto, Yellow Creek Gravel, Kent and Linda Eby, Dr. Diane Cook, Jack and Doris Phelps, Brent and Cindy Phelps, T&T Fertilizer Inc., Glen's Tire, Kent and Ann Schrock, and Dr. Robert and Laura Zell.

In rabbits, the grand champion meat pen was exhibited by Josiah Claar of Elkhart. He received $875 from M.C. Rabbitry, Brandon's Custom Flooring, Northern Indiana Rabbit, Friends and Family of Josiah Claar, Nik Sciba, Brenda Sciba, Jeff Irvan, John Irvan, Tina Weaver, Yoder Carpets, Jet Electric, Claar family, Rollin in the Dough Deliveries and Phil-Pepsi.

Natalie Yoder of Millersburg sold her reserve champion rabbit meat pen for $500 to Millersburg Lumber Co. Inc., Millersburg Animal Clinic and Millersburg/Clinton Twp. 4-H Boosters.

In poultry, Luke Holsopple of Millersburg and Lana Cripe of New Paris led the way. Holsopple sold his grand champion roaster pen for a record-tying $1,600. Buyers included Trent Hostetler, Chore-Time Brock, Millersburg Lumber, Millersburg/Clinton Twp. 4-H Boosters, Millersburg Feeds, New Horizons Aviation, Sharon and David Freed, Miller Poultry, Dave and Aldine Holsopple, Matt and Lanette Kritzman, Mike's Mower Service, New Paris/Benton Twp. 4-H Boosters, First State Bank, ADT Farm/Gary and Patty Kauffman, Dave and Sara Chupp, Gary and Connie Miller, Tom and Judy Yoder, Mindy and Peter Schlegel, M.A. Farms and Holsopple family.

For $1,000, Cripe sold her grand champion ducks to Hoppers Pike Street Grille, Bill and Nancy Everett, Darryl Riegsecker/Re/Max Realty and First State Bank.

Auction subtotals were: 96 beef steers, $275,868.25; 220 hogs, $305,313.48; 155 calves, $192,308; 142 goats (record), $137,106 (record); 145 lambs, $131,668.36 (record); 190 poultry pens, $60,800 (record); 8 dairy baskets, $18,040; and 83 rabbit pens, $24,495.
