Date Pinwheel Cookies

Filling:
8 oz. dates
¼ c. sugar
Dash of salt
1/8 c. water
1 c. walnuts, chopped
Dough:
½ c. soft butter or margarine
½ c. granulated sugar
½ c. firmly packed brown sugar
½ tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 c. flour
1/8 tsp. salt
¼ tsp. baking soda
For the date-nut filling: Cut dates into small bits and place in a saucepan. Add ¼ cup sugar, salt and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer 5 minutes. Add chopped nuts and cool.
For the dough: Cream butter or margarine and add sugars. Add vanilla and egg, beating well until light. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Chill until firm.
On waxed paper sprinkled with flour, roll half of the dough into 12x9" rectangle. Spread with filling and roll up from long end. Cover both rolls and refrigerate overnight.
Cut into 1/8" slices and bake 10 minutes on ungreased sheet at 375°. Store covered when cooled.
