Allegan Co. Steer Named State Champ

The Michigan Livestock Expo took place July 9-16. Area youths exhibited their livestock at the event. During the auction on July 16, exhibitors earned a total of $228,950.
The grand champion market beef from Allegan County set a new record. The steer, shown by Connor Meert of Plainwell, sold for $31,000. Meijer purchased the animal.
Also from Allegan County, Drew Flokstra of Hamilton exhibited the showcase market beef. The animal also set a record at $8,300. Buyers were Rabbit River Transport, B&L Leasing, Henry Klein, Dale and Elaine Flokstra, Hop Insurance Co., Byron Center Meats, Tyson, Meyer Natural Foods and Gene Compagner.
Jena Bradley of Cassopolis set a sale record with her grand champion market goat. The animal sold for $8,000 to Foster Swift Collins and Smith PC. Bradley also earned grand champion for her market lamb. GreenStone Farm Credit Services, The Andersons and Kalmbach Feeds placed a bid of $9,450.
In Berrien County, two exhibitors earned top placings. Kylie Brunke of Eau Claire sold the showcase market goat. Crystal Flash placed the winning bid on the animal at $1,000. The Great Lakes grand cross market lamb was shown by Drew George of Niles. The lamb sold for $8,500, another record for a spotlight lamb. Meijer paid for the animal.
St. Joseph County topped the sale for the most area champions. Allison Littlefield of Burr Oak earned the grand champion title for her market hog. Her pig was also named Great Lakes grand cross. Meijer bought the hog for $15,000.
The Great Lakes grand breed market hog was shown by Brady Littlefield of Burr Oak. The gavel fell at $4,500. Buyers were Foster Swift Collins and Smith PC, Michigan Farm Bureau and Michigan Farm Bureau Executives.
Colin Trattles of Burr Oak exhibited the showcase market hog. The pig sold for $6,000 to Crystal Flash and GreenStone Farm Credit Services.
Mariah Jansen of Sturgis sold the Great Lakes grand market goat for $2,000. Crystal Flash, Joe Gest, Jansen Plastering and Chastin Legget bought the goat.
Jakob Fosmore of East Leroy in Calhoun County owned the pig that was named showcase market hog. ArgoLiquid placed the bid of $5,000 and bought the animal.
Three exhibitors from Branch County took home champion titles. Payton Hines of Quincy showed the reserve champion market hog. ArgoLiquid purchased the animal for $7,500.
The showcase market hog was owned by Thomas Littlefield of Bronson. Crystal Flash and GreenStone Farm Credit Services bought the pig for $5,000.
Carter Pish of Bronson earned $2,500 for the Great Lakes grand market goat. Buyer of the animal were High Noon Feeds, Kalmbach Feeds, Chastin Legget, Tri-State Linex, Mike Sickels, National Farmers Organization, Taylor Trucking, T-Equipment and Wana Feed.
