Educator Aims to Empower Youth, Improve Environment

Published: Friday, November 20, 2020

A Person You Should Know

Anna Balas is a new Extension 4-H youth educator in Elkhart County. A Michigan native, Balas now lives in Mishawaka.

Family: I grew up in Metro Detroit with my parents and a younger brother, who is currently attending the University of Michigan.

My Job: I am the newest of three Extension educators for 4-H youth development in Elkhart County. I work with volunteers, youth and families to provide support and direction for the 4-H program.

My mentor: My mentors are definitely my parents. They always encouraged me to be my best, taught me how to make good decisions, and tirelessly supported all of my goals.

My mission in life: I want to leave the world a better place than I found it—empowering our youth, increasing equity, and improving the environment are especially important to me.

How I give back: I was just matched with a Little Sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County. I'm very excited to get involved in my new community and encourage youths to reach their full potential.

Hobbies: I enjoy running outside, reading and visiting the beautiful Lake Michigan beaches.

If I Could Do Something Else: I would love to work for a sustainability office at a university or be a taste tester for Vanilla Bean Creamery!
