Area Youth Stand Out in HBC Steer Judging

Published: Friday, February 26, 2021

Three area exhibitors showed well at the 34th Hoosier Beef Congress at the Indiana State Fairgrounds last weekend despite the worst weather of the winter.

In the steer competition, Harper Henney of Angola exhibited the reserve champion, Delaney Ott of Albion finished third and Harlee Henney of Angola was fourth.

The HBC is the largest single-state prospect cattle show held in the United States. This year's event was delayed from the normal weekend in December due to event restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Saturday morning, roughly 400 young exhibitors participated in the Showmanship competition. The junior show began Saturday afternoon. The popular HBC tradeshow offered Indiana cattlemen and women examples of the latest in cattle-handling equipment, feeds, educational demonstrations and retail shopping.

The live-streaming of the HBC continued to grow in popularity for those who could be there in person. Videos of the 2020 HBC Showmanship and Junior Shows have been archived and are available for viewing at www.waltonwebcasting.com.

"To be able to put on the show this year is very gratifying," Joe Moore, executive vice president of Indiana Beef Cattle Assn., said in a news release. "It was the work of the IBCA board of directors, the HBC committee, the many volunteers, the IBCA staff and the Indiana State Fair and Event Center who have made this event so special, for so many people, for so many years."

The top five steers were shown by: William Morris of Bargersville, grand champion (Crossbred); Harper Henny of Angola, reserve champion (Crossbred); Delaney Ott of Albion, third (Shorthorn); Harlee Henney of Angola, fourth (Charolais); and Cagney Utterback of Alexandria, fifth (Maine).

The top five heifers were shown by: Mercedes Ferree of Sullivan, supreme champion (Heifer-Angus); Mercedes Ferree, reserve supreme champion (Heifer-Sim Solution); Aubrey Neal of Osgood, third (Limousin); Landree Warnock of Urbana, fourth (Chianina); and Houston Ferree of Sullivan, fifth (Commerical).
