After a one-year absence, buyers and sellers once again came together for a good, old-fashioned 4-H auction last Friday in South Bend. The festivities started with the traditional bell ringing and continued with a parade of smiling 4-H'ers bringing their cherished animals into the show ring. By the end of the day, a grand total of $352,940.45 had changed hands, with St. Joseph County (Ind.) 4-H'ers pocketing the money.

This year's auction total compares with the 2019 total of $372,912.54. Last year's premium-only auction raised $70,246.12.

Ava Carrico's grand champion barrow paced the swine sale. Buyers (see list at end of story) paid an impressive $52 per pound ($14,300) for the 275-pound champion Duroc.

Standing second in the barrow show was Alex Toth of North Liberty, who will show her hog at the state fair.

The grand champion market litter was exhibited by Lucas Bradshaw of New Carlisle. However, Bradshaw did not sell his animals in the auction.

Miah Lichtenbarger of North Liberty sold the reserve champion market litter for $3 per pound ($927) to Janette Lichtenbarger of North Liberty.

At $92,921.05, the swine sale generated the most receipts in the St. Joseph County 4-H auction. A total of 128 barrows were sold.

Toth also exhibited the grand and reserve champion market lambs, both of which were not offered at auction. She plans on taking her reserve barrow and both sheep to the state fair.

With 80 lots, the lamb auction raised $48,509.50.

In the beef auction, Mckenzie Scott of Bremen led the way with her grand champion lottery steer. The third-year 4-H'er sold her 1,287-pound champion Hereford for $5 per pound ($6,435) to a group of supporters (see list). Scott was also the champion beginner showman.

Logan Laidig of Mishawaka sold the reserve champion lottery steer for $4.75 per pound ($6,369.75). A buyer group (see list) had the high bid.

Bridgette Futa of New Carlisle exhibited the grand champion born and bred steer. She earned $7 per pound ($9,142) from Laidig Systems Inc., Ceres Solutions and a support group (see list). The steer weighed 1,306 pounds.

Payton Bohnke of North Liberty placed first in the starter calf show. He sold the 564-pound calf for $2.50 per pound ($1,410) to Community Vault.

Thirty-eight lots of beef were auctioned off, raising $128,500.50.

In dairy beef, Lance Moser of Bremen sold the grand champion for $5.45 per pound ($8,338.50) to 1st Source Bank and a support group (see list). The steer weighed 1,530 pounds. Next was Caroline Bickel of Bremen with the reserve champion dairy steer. The 1,520-pounder brought $4.25 per pound ($6,460) from a support group.

Eighteen lots of dairy beef were sold, bringing $46,754.40.

Siblings Dillon and Breanne Freeman, of Bremen, collected five of the six top awards in dairy cattle. Dillon exhibited two winners—the grand champion Ayrshire and grand champion Brown Swiss. He received $1,000 for milk representing the Ayrshire cow, and $1,000 for a gallon of Brown Swiss milk. The high bid on both lots came from a support group (see list), along with Ceres Solutions on the Ayrshire lot.

Breanne showed the grand champion Holstein and grand champion Jersey. The Holstein's milk brought $900 from a support group (see list), and the Jersey milk fetched $900 from the same group. Breanne also exhibited the reserve champion Brown Swiss, selling milk for $750 to a group buying in memory of Gene Freeman.

Marissa Stambaugh of South Bend showed the other dairy winner, earning $250 for reserve champion Holstein milk. The high bid came from the Bartholomew family of Mishawaka.

Six lots of dairy milk were sold, raising $4,800.

In another sibling showdown, Bryson and Brody Minne, of Wakarusa, finished first and second in the market goat show. Bryson took the purple rosette with his 73-pound wether, while Brody earned reserve champion honors with his 79-pound wether. During last Friday's auction, a large support group came together for both boys. Bryson sold his grand champion for $5,250, while Brody received $3,250.

Laura Golubski of Niles, Mich. exhibited the reserve champion dairy wether, which sold for $325 to Lidecker Farms of Bremen.

In the goat auction, 25 wethers sold for $16,240.

In rabbits, Chloe Horban of South Bend exhibited the grand champion meat pen, fryer and roaster. She earned $200 for the meat pen from the Knowlton family, $200 from the Kristin Schalliol family and $125 from Tammy Yoder, bidding in memory of Charlie Yoder.

Chloe's brother, Seth, had the reserve champions on all three pens. He sold his reserve meat pen for $150 to 1st Brethren Church of Admore, the fryer for $150 to Lambert Custom Upholstery, and the roaster for $200 to the Kristin Schalliol family.

Not to be outdone, a third Horban sibling, Miriam, showed the grand champion stewer, earning $1,075 from Local Union 172 Plumbers and Pipefitters. Seth Horban was next with the reserve champion stewer, which brought $250 from the Knowlton family.

Thirty-five rabbit lots generated $6,205.

In poultry, Maddison Dosmann of North Liberty collected $1,100 from supporters (see list) on the sale of her grand champion broiler. Reese Bohnke, also of North Liberty, sold her reserve champion broiler for $800 to Community Vault.

Josiah Weiss of North Liberty sold the grand champion turkey for $150 to Beth Allsop. Annamarie Veger, a 10-year member from North Liberty, earned $150 from Gleaner Life Insurance Society for her reserve champion turkey.

Addyson Farias, a 10-year member from Mishawaka, showed two poultry winners, the grand champion Pekin duck and the grand champion standard duck. She sold the Pekin for $250 to the Dale Sommers family of Osceola. She then sold the standard duck for $200 to the Kristin Shalliol family of Mishawaka.

Dosmann's reserve champion Pekin duck fetched $1,100 from her support group. Veger auctioned her reserve champion standard duck for $150 to Gleaner Life Insurance Society.

With 34 lots, poultry sales totaled $8,810.

In other sales, the 4-H rabbit and poultry club received $200 for a dozen eggs. The eggs were sold to Cakes by Ann.
