Cass County 4-H'ers Rake in $178,000 at Auction

A good turnout at the Cass County 4-H auction is evidenced by the $178,005 brought in by the livestock exhibitors last Friday in Logansport. The amount was down from last year's total of $275,209, with 187 total lots sold during the auction.
Keeli Bell of Galveston showed the grand champion market beef steer, which sold to a long list of buyers (see end of story). At $11.54 per pound, the sale of the 1,445-pound steer set a new record at the Cass County livestock auction. The daughter of Brady and Jessica Bell earned a grand total of $16,675 from the sale.
Showing the reserve champion market beef steer, which sold for $4,700, was Zoey Frey of Walton. A total of 40 buyers (see list) paid $3.73 per pound for the 1,260-pound animal.
Fifteen market beef lots were sold, bringing the beef total to $36,315. Additionally, the dairy beef auction was comprised of three total lots, earning a total of $5,400. The dairy feeder auction earned $6,175, with nine animals sold. Neither the dairy beef nor dairy feeder auctions had a grand or reserve champion to sell.
The grand champion dairy wether, bringing in a total of $1,645, was shown by Joslin Harrison of Royal Center. The goat sold for $18.48 per pound, and was auctioned off to a significant number of buyers (see list). The reserve champion dairy wether, shown by Ella Landes of Walton, sold for $6.47 a pound and brought in a total of $375. Kayla and Matt Gibson family, the Howard Swine Farm and Michele Hart were the buyers of this dairy goat.
Twenty-one dairy wethers were auctioned off, pulling in a total of $13,085.
Evan Howard of Logansport showed the grand champion meat wether, which sold to a long list of supporters (see list). The goat sold for $43.13 per pound, earning the 10-year 4-H member a total of $3,450. Howard brought in roughly half of the total earnings from the meat goats auction, which totaled $6,925.
The single grand champion myotonic wether, shown by Reneelea Bell of Logansport, was sold to seven different buyers and brought in a total of $725 ($13.68 per pound). Buyers are listed at the end of the story.
In commercial poultry, Elizabeth Sprow showed her grand champion exhibition turkey, which sold for $1,375 to 21 different buyers (see list). With 15 total exhibits sold, the poultry total amounted to $5,700.
The grand champion rabbit meat pen shown by Samuel Vandeburg was auctioned off for a total of $800 to Jeff and Julie Berlet. Following this sale, the reserve champion meat rabbit pen belonging to Judd McLain sold for $750 to nine buyers (see list). With five total pens sold, the rabbits brought in $2,525.
Six 10-year 4-H'ers auctioned off their sheep during the auction, and a total of 19 lambs were sold, bringing in $15,090.
Showing her grand champion barrow was Allison Liggett of Walton, who earned $27.56 a pound ($7,525) for the 273-pound animal. Surpassing this amount was the sale of the reserve champion barrow, shown by Breckyn Bell. The 265-pound animal sold for $28.87 a pound and brought in a total of $7,650. The high bid on both the grand champion and reserve champion barrows came from over a hundred buyers (see list).
Eighty-six total hogs were sold, bringing the total to $81,265.
Other sales included llama products sold by the Cass County Llama Club. The basket of items was sold to Michael and Cindy Howard family, as well as the Cass County Animal Hospital, for a total of $750.
Additionally, Evan Adams of Royal Center sold a basket of dairy goat products for $1,525. The 19 buyers are listed at the end of the story.
Miss Cass County, Finley Hettinger, auctioned off an enthusiastic kiss for $1,900. The kiss was received by her proud escort and father, Brian Hettinger. The high bid for Miss Hettinger's kiss came from 25 buyers (see list).
The "Best of Cass County" basket sold for $625 to the Cass County Animal Hospital, Karen Schlegelmilch, and Alvin and Jill Mennen, bringing the auction to a grand total of $178,005.
