Ottawa Youth Earn $499K

The sale of livestock totaled $499,000 at the Ottawa County Fair, held July 24-29 in Holland. A total of 346 animals were sold.

Joe VanKampen and Mya Baumann, both of Holland, brought multiple winners. VanKampen showed the grand champion barrow, reserve champion gilt, grand champion market goat and grand champion market doe. Baumann exhibited the grand champion beef steer, grand champion ewe and grand champion wether.

VanKampen's 274-pound grand champion barrow sold for $6 per pound ($1.44) to Morren Brothers Agri Service. A&B Farms of Holland picked up VanKampen's 250-pound reserve champion gilt for $3.75 per pound ($937.50).

His grand champion market goat brought $8 per pound ($720) from Schoenborn Trucking, and his grand champion market doe fetched $24.50 per pound ($1,862) from Thunderbolt Club Goats.

For Baumann's 1,408-pound grand champion beef steer, CER Services Inc. had the high bid of $3.25 per pound ($4,576). In the sheep sale, Bauman sold the 122-pound grand champion ewe for $8 per pound ($976) to Endeavor Ag and Energy, and the 134-pound grand champion wether for $12.50 per pound ($1,675) to Farm Bureau Insurance—Hop Agency.

The 112-pound reserve champion ewe belonging to Haylee Smith of Zeeland was auctioned for $4.25 per pound ($476) to AAD Technologies, and Smith's 138-pound reserve champion wether was sold for $4.25 per pound ($586.50) to A&B Farms.

Colbie Weaver of Zeeland stood right behind VanKampen in the meat goat show. Weaver showed both the reserve champion market wether and reserve champion market doe. A&B Farms had the high bid on the wether, paying $3.75 per pound ($382.50), and Piers Feeds and Country Store bought the doe, paying $5 per pound ($445).

Eliana and Kaiya Persenaire, two sisters from Hudsonville, swept the top awards in the dairy goat show. Eliana sold the grand champion dairy wether for $5.75 per pound ($431.25) to Townline Hatchery, and Kaiya sold the reserve champion dairy wether for $4.50 per pound ($364.50) to Pickle Street Veterinary Service.

In swine, Kaylee Mazurek of Zeeland sold the 265-pound grand champion gilt for $5 per pound ($1,325) to J&H Oil Co.

Amanda Nicholls of Zeeland received $4.25 per pound ($1,156) from Ron Meyer and Associates for the reserve champion barrow, which weighed 272 pounds.

Nicholls also was a winner in the beef show, as she exhibited the reserve champion steer. She sold the 1,492-pounder for $4 per pound ($5,968) to Ron Meyer and Associates.

Rhianna Bruursema of West Olive partnered with Morren Brothers Agri Service on the purchase of her grand champion dairy steer. Bruursema received $3.25 per pound ($5,278) for the 1,624-pounder. Brooklyn TenHoppen of Zeeland sold the 1,304-pound reserve champion dairy steer for $2.25 per pound ($2,934) to Agritek.

In dairy feeder calves, Leah Russcher of Zeeland sold the grand champion for $6 per pound ($3,222) to Endeavor Ag and Energy. Maddie Bosch, also of Zeeland, was next with the reserve champion dairy feeder calf. It sold for $2.30 per pound ($982.10) to Maple Hill Beef Farm.

Melaina DeWys of Zeeland sold the grand champion beef feeder calf for $3.20 per pound ($1,814.40) to Karel Excavating. Morren Crops and Cattle purchased the reserve champion beef feeder belonging to Tenley Roetman of Zeeland. Tenley received $10 per pound ($4,790).

The grand champion heifer feeder calf belonging to Rylee Anderson of Nunica was purchased by Pickle Street Veterinary Service for $2.60 per pound ($1,190.80). Kennedy Hower of West Olive sold the reserve champion heifer calf for $2.20 per pound ($792) to Piers Feeds and Country Store.
