Corn Harvest Now 56% Complete

Published: Friday, November 3, 2023

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Oct. 29.

Damp weather hindered harvest progress and left many Indiana growers waiting for corn to dry.

Soil moisture levels increased from the previous week, with 70% of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 59.1 degrees F, 7.9 degrees above normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from .05 to 2.08 inches over the week.

The statewide average precipitation was .97 inches, .44 inches above normal.

There were 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork.

Over half of Indiana's corn for grain had been harvested. Many growers reported that corn was still not drying as quickly as expected.

Soybean harvest progress surpassed its five-year average.

Winter wheat emergence progress continued behind the five-year average.

Livestock reportedly enjoyed consistently cooler temperatures, and many received supplemental hay.

Pasture conditions remain unchanged from the previous week, with 30% of pastures rated in good to excellent condition.

Other activities for the week included fall tilling, mold monitoring, fertilizer applications, harvest equipment maintenance and grain hauling.

The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 21, 21, 18, 18; soybeans harvested, 13, 13, 11, 13.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 56, 42, 69, 65; soybeans harvested, 79, 65, 85, 78; winter wheat planted, 72, 57, 79, 80; winter wheat emerged, 41, 23, 39, 52.
