Harvest Season Comes to an End

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 24.

Winter preparations commenced as harvest season wrapped up for many Indiana farmers.

Soil moisture levels increased from the previous week, with 58% of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 39.1 degrees F, .6 degrees below normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from .02 to .88 inches over the week.

The statewide average precipitation was .42 inches, .44 inches below normal.

There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork.

Corn harvested for grain progress neared completion and was in line with the five-year average pace.

Winter wheat emergence was slightly behind the five-year average.

Most livestock have been moved to winter lots and were reportedly doing well. Some parts of the state saw snow.

Other activities for the week included grain hauling, holiday festivities, harvest equipment maintenance and storage, winter preparations and lime spreading.

The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 19, 19, NA, NA.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 95, 90, 98, 95; winter wheat emerged, 89, 81, 92, 91.
