A Lot of Grain Still to Be Harvested
Published: Friday, December 1, 2023
The following is from the Michigan Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 24.
Soaking rains last Tuesday delayed harvest.
There were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork.
Rain early in the week and snow at the end of the week slowed harvest, but freezing temperatures late in the week helped to firm up the ground, which aided in harvest.
Soybean harvest wrapped up. Corn for grain moisture content at harvest was 21%, up 3 points from the previous year.
Corn for grain harvest remained behind the respective five-year averages. Farmers report quite a bit of corn still left to be harvested.
Winter wheat acreage for 2024 harvest was reported as down from previous years due to harvest delays.
Other activities last week included tending livestock and hauling grain.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 79, 67, 94, 83; soybeans harvested, 96, 92, 100, 92; winter wheat emerged, 93, 86, 100, 93.
