Wawasee FFA Honors Members for Accomplishments

Libby Haab, a senior member of the Wawasee FFA chapter, picked up four awards during the chapter's annual banquet last Friday in Syracuse.

Haab was named Star Farmer and received the Blue and Gold award. She also received the Chad Beer Memorial Scholarship and the Ray E. Darr Memorial Scholarship.

Haab, the daughter of Jason and Amber Haab of Milford, served as chapter vice president this year. She plans to attend Huntington University in the fall.

Lucas Wilkinson served as chapter president this year. He also received the Blue and Gold award.

Other top award winners were: Josie Melton, Star in Ag Placement; Keira Lortie, Star in Agriscience; Preston Miller, Star Greenhand; Coltin Bucher, Advisor's Award; and Emma Jackson, Agriculture Education Scholarship.

Reagan Scott earned the Senior Leadership Award, while Mason Poff won the Junior Leadership Award. Recipients of the sophomore and freshmen leadership awards were Carter Wylds and Katy Eppert, respectively.

This year's officer team included: Wilkinson, president; Haab, vice president; Emerson Krull, secretary; Jackson, treasurer; Melton, reporter; Bucher, sentinel; and Jazlyn Weimer, student advisor.

Haab, Jackson, Lortie and Melton were also recognized for earning their Hoosier FFA Degrees. If approved at the state level, they will receive the award at the Indiana FFA State Convention in June. Krull has applied for her American Degree; if approved, she will receive the degree at National Convention in October.

Seven FFA members earned a scholarship by participating in the Caramel Corn and Meat Stick fundraiser. Participating seniors included Haab, Jackson, Melton, Kylie Perkins, Scott, Kenley Stewart and Tai Vu.

For the adult awards, the Honorary Chapter Degree was presented to

Paul Scott, Jason and Amber Haab, Richard and Jody Melton, and Eric and Amanda Jackson.

The Distinguished Service award was presented to Clayton Garden Center for their many years of support to the Wawasee agriculture program.

Conner Sausaman was recognized as the 2024 Wawasee FFA Alumnus of the Year.

Adults recognized for serving as a coach to a career or leadership development event this year were Rachel Platt, Brad Clayton, Jewel Wise, Kasey Watts, Ashley Gardner and Kelly Heckaman.

Certificates of Appreciation were given to Hope and Ben Maynus, Scott Eisenhour, Nancy and Jim Reiff, Chad and Amanda Tom, Todd and Kristine Harris, J.R. and Renee Snavely, and Shawn and Lissa Krull.

Wawasee FFA members last Friday received over $4,350 in awards and scholarships, thanks to various sponsors. The supporters include: Ag Cares Committee, CTB Inc., Anderson Farms, Farm Credit Service, Creighton Brothers, Purity Gases, Elite Agronomy, Syracuse-Wawasee Garden Club, Kercher's Sunrise Orchard, Miller's Orchard, Milford Food Bank, Milford Lions Club, Harvest Coffee, Morehouse Grain Farms, Avis Wilkinson, Matt and Soni Morehouse, Tom and Missy Sorenson, Nell Jackson, Clunette Grain Elevator, Deatsman Grain Elevator, CereServ Grain Elevator, Arlen and Shirley Bobeck, Sherm Bryant, Crestview Farms, Clayton Garden Center, Crop Fertility Specialists, Mark and Denise Grady, GreenMark Equipment, Knights of Columbus, Maple Leaf Farms, Northern Indiana Johnny Poppers, Doug and Doreen Ruch, Joe and Myra Sands, Black Walnut Farms: Dr. Gervas and Ann Schafer and Loretta Schafer, Schlipf Precision Ag, Sonja Easterday Trust Fund, T-N-T Performance Machine Shop, Tom Farms LLC, Randy and Eldonna Warren, Doug and Jill Shrock.

The banquet concluded with the installation of the 2024-25 chapter officers. Wilkinson will serve another year as chapter president. He will be joined by Lortie, vice president; Krull, secretary; Bucher, treasurer; Abbi Harris and Taelyn Tom, reporters; Jace Beer and Carter Grady, sentinels; and Weimer, student advisor.
