Another Week of Warm, Wet Weather

Published: Friday, May 24, 2024

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending May 19.

Despite above-average rainfall, Indiana farmers were still able to make some planting progress.

Topsoil moisture levels decreased from the previous week, with 94% rated adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 66.5 degrees F, 4.1 degrees above normal.

The statewide average precipitation was 1.44 inches, .38 inches above normal.

There were 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork.

Another week of warmer than normal temperatures and above average rainfall aided emergence on fields that were planted, but kept low-lying fields saturated and unable to be worked.

Corn and soybean planting progressed approximately on pace with the five-year average at 54 and 49% planted, respectively.

Some farmers reported that limited replanting would be necessary.

Warm temperatures aided emergence as both crops remained ahead of five-year emergence averages.

Winter wheat progress was notably ahead of the five-year averages for both jointing and heading.

Winter wheat condition remained stable with 80% of the crop rated good to excellent. Some minor lodging was reported.

First cuttings of hay continued, and pasture conditions improved from the previous week, with 76% of pasture rated in good to excellent condition.

Other activities included tillage and spraying.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: corn planted, 54, 36, 71, 57; corn emerged, 30, 15, 40, 29; soybeans planted, 49, 34, 66, 46; soybeans emerged, 27, 14, 34, 20; winter wheat jointing, 94, 88, 92, 86; winter wheat headed, 65, 46, 47, 40; alfalfa hay, first cutting, 13, 3, 7, 6; other hay, first cutting, 10, 3, 6, 5.
