Soybean Harvest Speeds Along

The following is from the Michigan Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Oct. 20.
Corn and soybean harvest made significant gains last week. There were 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork.
Both soybeans and corn harvested for grain advanced 14 percentage points.
Scattered precipitation helped winter wheat germination; 77% of the crop had been planted.
Sugarbeet harvest continued on a "plant need" basis.
Potato harvest was winding down. Rain improved dry harvest conditions in parts of the state last week.
A few producers harvested a fourth cutting of hay.
Other activities last week included soil testing, planting cover crops, fall tillage, spreading manure and fertilizer, hauling hay, chopping alfalfa for haylage, alfalfa seeding, tending to livestock, and farm planning for next year.
Fruit
Apple harvest continued to wrap up. Aztec, Fuji and Evercrisp harvest continued in the West Central. Pink Lady harvest began on the Ridge.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 45, 31, 22, 26; soybeans harvested, 80, 66, 40, 49; winter wheat planted, 77, 65, 53, 68; winter wheat emerged, 49, 31, 39, 44; alfalfa hay, fourth cutting, 83, 75, 88, NA; other hay, fourth cutting, 40, 30, NA, NA; sugarbeets harvested, 31, 27, 21, 36.
