Bean Harvest Is Nearly Complete

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Oct. 27.
Indiana farmers continued harvest activities under dry and dusty field conditions. Topsoil moisture levels decreased from the previous week, with 24% rated adequate or surplus.
The average temperature for the week was 54.9 degrees F, 3.4 degrees above normal.
The statewide average precipitation was .08 inches, .50 inches below normal.
There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork.
Over three-fourths of Indiana's corn for grain had been harvested, while the soybean harvest was progressing closer to completion.
Producers cautiously carried out harvest activities as a lack of rainfall contributed to small field fires and burn bans in many counties throughout the state.
Dry topsoil continued to inhibit winter wheat germination.
Livestock still required supplemental hay and water, and fall calving continued.
Pasture conditions decreased from the previous week, with 24% rated in good to excellent condition.
Other activities included fall tillage, grain hauling and livestock tending.
The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 16, 17, 21, 19; soybeans harvested, 11, 11, 13, 13.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 77, 61, 52, 58; soybeans harvested, 87, 75, 75, 75; winter wheat planted, 72, 59, 68, 74; winter wheat emerged, 40, 26, 36, 43; alfalfa hay, fourth cutting, 90, 85, 85, 88; other hay, fourth cutting, 59, 51, 74, 69.
