Harvest Draws to a Completion
Published: Friday, November 15, 2024
The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 10.
Gentle rain helped to slowly moisten the soil as harvest neared conclusion across the state. Topsoil moisture levels increased from the previous week, with 40% rated adequate or surplus.
The average temperature for the week was 56.5 degrees F, 11.5 degrees above normal.
The statewide average precipitation was 1.84 inches, 1.02 inches above normal.
There were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork.
Despite rainfall during the previous week, the soil remained drier than usual due to exceptionally warm fall weather and persistent lack of precipitation. Many burn bans have been lifted.
Corn and soybean harvest progress ended the week at 94 and 96%, respectively, which was significantly ahead of the five-year averages.
Winter wheat condition was stable with 62% of the crop rated in good to excellent condition. However, some planted winter wheat was reported to be struggling to emerge due to a lack of moisture.
Other activities included fall tillage, planting cover crops, hauling grain and applying lime and manure.
The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 16, 16, 20, 19; soybeans harvested, 11, 11, 13, 13.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 94, 88, 78, 81; soybeans harvested, 96, 93, 92, 90; winter wheat planted, 92, 83, 90, 92; winter wheat emerged, 71, 57, 71, 73.
