Michigan Has 5 Days for Fieldwork

Published: Friday, November 15, 2024

The following is from the Michigan Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 10.

Measurable precipitation and warm temperatures aided wheat emergence and growth as corn and soybean growers were finishing up harvest. There were 5 days suitable for fieldwork.

Corn harvested for grain reached 91% last week, 31 points ahead of the five-year average.

Ninety-two percent of winter wheat had emerged, an increase of 14 points from the previous week.

Sugarbeet harvest continued as sugar plants worked at capacity. Permanent piling of the crop was still intermittent.

Other activities last week included soil testing, planting cover crops, hauling grain, fall tillage, tending to livestock and farm planning for next year.

Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 12%; short, 20%; adequate, 65%; surplus, 3%.

Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 19%; short, 21%; adequate, 58%; surplus, 2%.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 91, 82, 49, 60; winter wheat emerged, 92, 78, 74, 83; sugarbeets harvested, 85, 70, 89, 87.
