Courtney's Chronicles

Labor Day is celebrated in many different ways around the world, but one common theme is the appreciation of contributions made by workers in various industries, including agriculture. From sunrise to sunset, through every season, agricultural workers work tirelessly to grow the food we put on our tables each day. It's important this Labor Day to show your honor and appreciation for the hard-working hands that feed the world, our farmers and farm laborers. Their dedication, perseverance and tireless efforts play a crucial role in feeding our communities and sustaining our way of life. Through your commitment to nurturing the land and caring for the animals, consumers get to place wholesome and nutritious food on their tables. Those who work in the agriculture field play an integral part in our thriving and stable food supply.

The gratitude doesn't stop with farmers and farm laborers. We must not forget to show our thanks to all people in agriculture, including foresters, equipment operators, mechanics, scientists, educators and more. These are all essential to making sure we are fed, clothed and housed. According to USDA.gov, more than 22 million people work in agriculture, and in Indiana, agriculture directly supports an estimated 107,000 jobs. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on sustainability and the role that agriculture plays in promoting a sustainable future. The techniques farmers have come up with over the years have made an impact on environmental health, such as reducing chemicals, conserving water and promoting soil health.

The history of Labor Day originated with the efforts of labor unions and other worker groups in the 19th century. It wasn't until 1894 that the holiday became so popular that Congress recognized the day, with President Cleveland establishing the first Monday in September as Labor Day. Over time, this holiday has led to become the informal end of summer in the United States, signaling summer fashions to be put away, fairs and festivals are held, and it even signifies the kickoff of the Fall football season. And who doesn't love a good crisp fall day with some college football and cookouts?

But what is so critical about the American farmer is no matter what, they will advocate for not themselves, but for every other citizen in the United States. They will advocate for fair wages, sustainable practices, and access to resources that they need to thrive. The ag industry is filled with some of the hardest-working individuals that I know, and their endless efforts shouldn't be taken for granted and should be shown appreciation and support.

As we gather for picnics and parades, let's take a moment to thank the people who are the backbone of our food system. Our support for farmers goes beyond just one day. Remember, farmers don't get a day off. They work nights, weekends and holidays to feed, clothe and fuel the world. In the United States, agriculture is critical, and we should be honored to work alongside those who pour their heart and soul into the land as they pour sweat, passion and perseverance into every acre. Let's show our appreciation for those who keep the barns bustling and communities thriving. Through the dedication of farmers, ranchers and agricultural workers, our world is fueled.

I know I have spoken highly of farmers and agricultural workers in this column, but for all of us who work a job, take a moment to reflect on the significance of the work you do and enjoy a well-deserved break. I hope you find some time this Labor Day to kick up your boots and enjoy the view. Whether that view is of the farm, your family or the back of your eyelids! Happy Labor Day!
