LaGrange Tour Celebrates Barns

Published: Friday, August 29, 2025

The Indiana Barn Foundation, in conjunction with LaGrange County tourism officials, is planning for a two-day celebration of Indiana barns.

The barn foundation holds its annual barn tour in different corners of the state. This year, LaGrange County is hosting the tour on Sept. 13, with a total of nine barns being open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A special preview night will be held the previous evening at Brown Swiss Dairy Farm in Shipshewana.

Advance tickets are $15 for IBF members or $20 for non-members. Children 16 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased online (https://www.indianabarns.org/events) until 5 p.m. on Sept. 12 at the member/non-member prices. Tickets the day of the tour will be $20 for all and available in-person at Pretty Valley Barn, 2685 S. 950 E., LaGrange, which will serve as the day-of tour headquarters.

Owned by Steve and Deanna Engleking, this 1940s barn was built to milk 40 Jersey cows and features original concrete work, a mechanical gutter system and a granary. Today, the barn serves as a workshop and storage space on their farmstead.

There, visitors can purchase tickets, buy delicacies from a food truck, take selfies and get a free barn tour sticker. There will also be a book signing from 10 a.m. to noon featuring Cindy Ladage, author of "Farm Girl Adventures."

"This tour is a celebration of Indiana's agricultural legacy," said Sonya Nash, executive director of the LaGrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau. "It's a chance for families, history lovers and curious travelers to connect with the past and enjoy the beauty of Amish country."

On the Sept. 12 preview night, Stutzman Dairy Farm in Shipshewana will provide a guided tour of their farm, including the brilliantly painted Brown Swiss Dairy Barn. Other activities include: barn quilt tour, straw bale art trail and a barn quilt workshop.
