Woods, Frazier, Troike Show Top Animals in Hamlet

A total of 477 lots earned $254,438 for 4-H'ers at the Starke County 4-H livestock auction on June 26 in Hamlet. That surpassed last year's $207,785.51 brought in by 371 lots.

A breakdown of prices by species includes: 166 swine, $103,557; 12 beef steers, $54,991.65 28 market lambs, $25,275.50; four dairy steers, $16,225.75; 133 poultry animals, $38,665; 21 dairy goats, $7,843.50; 70 meat goats, $53,556.50; and 30 rabbits, $6,000.

Ryder Woods of Culver exhibited the grand champion steer and raked in $4.29 per pound ($5,201) for his 1,210-pound beef animal. VFW Post 748 was the buyer. Chloe Temple of Knox turned her reserve champion beef steer, selling it to the friends and family of Chloe Temple buyer group for $6,600.

Jordyn Tabler of Kewanna exhibited the reserve champion dairy steer and raked in $4,049.50 after selling to Smith's Farm Store and Livestock, Equipment Specialists, and Benjamin Livestock. Weighing 1,246 pounds, that brings his total to $3.25 per pound.

Bailee Frazier of Walkerton brought in $874.25 with the sale of her grand champion barrow to American Legion Post 131 on Knox.

The 272-pound reserve champion market gilt was purchased by Cue Broadcast & MNT Inspection Services, Shaw Pipeline Services and Midwestern Contractors of Illinois for $2,992 ($11 per pound). Wyatt Stalbaum of North Judson was the exhibitor.

D.J. Garland of Hamlet showed the reserve champion lamb. It was sold to William Garland for $3,741, or $29 per pound. The lamb weighed 129 pounds. Jackson Troike of Walkerton exhibited the grand champion pair of lambs. They weighed 135 and 138 pounds, and sold for $6 and $6.50 per pound, respectively. In total, Troike walked away $1,707 richer. VFW Post 748 paid the high bid for the 135-pounder, and Starke County Co-op bought the 138-pound lamb.

Knox's Kerslynn Collins showed the grand champion meat wether, earning $3,527.50 from the Friends and Family of Kerslynn Collins buyer group. Vincent Condon, also of Knox, sold the reserve champion to a buyer group for $2,600. Maple Home Farms purchased the reserve champion dairy wether from Sloane Fosler with a bid of $512.

Two North Judson youths showed the top two broilers in the poultry sale. Nathanial Hammack sold his grand champion to Barry and Sue Matzat and Matzat Poultry Processing for $200. Hannah Dolezal earned $400 with her reserve champion sale to Wolf Ag.

Larry Mann Construction paid the high bid for Dominic Bartoli's grand champion roaster, spending $400. Bianca Bartoli sold the reserve champion to Tom and Sheri Bartoli for $350. The siblings are from Knox.

Jocelynn Lena entered the sale ring with the grand champion goose, which earned her $400 from Larry Mann Construction. The North Judson youth was followed closely by Hammack, who auctioned his reserve champion for $200 from Hamlet Feed Mill.

The first sale of the evening was Casey Koch's grand champion duck. It brought in $250 from Koch Farms for the Grovertown youth. Riley Collins of Knox turned her reserve champion for a profit of $125, paid by Hajeck Farms.

In turkeys, Kinsey Lambert of North Judson showed the top gobbler and sold it to Starke County Farm Bureau Inc. for $550. Her sister, Karley, showed the reserve champion and earned $450 from Hajek Farms.

Louise Hesters showed the reserve champion stewer. It was sold to Starke County Co-op for $350.

Kimberly Thomas paid $100 for Colton Little's grand champion roaster. The reserve champion brought in $275 for Henley Smrt. Christopher Grochowski sold the grand champion fryer and the grand champion meat pen. He earned $500 from Starke County Farm Bureau Inc. and $375 from Caring Transitions, respectively. Bianca Bartoli showed the reserve champion fryer and earned $125 from Tom and Sheri Bartoli. Dominic Bartoli sold his reserve champion meat pen to the same buyers for $275.

Not selling at the auction were: grand champion dairy steer and grand champion market heifer, Rylen Tuholski, North Judson; grand champion gilt, Sophie Grossman-Norris, Culver; grand champion market lamb, Brodie Radtke, North Judson; grand champion meat market doe, Serenity Nava, Knox; grand champion dairy market wether, Laina Norris, Knox; grand champion stewer, Dominic Bartoli; reserve champion barrow, Anna Lawrence, Hamlet; and reserve champion meat market doe, Nash Fier, Culver.
