'City Roots, Country Boots' Chosen as Theme of Elkhart County 4-H Fair

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair introduced Nick Kieffer as its 2027 fair board president and unveiled the theme "City Roots & Country Boots" during its annual fair board banquet last Wednesday in Goshen. Kieffer and his wife Mollie have two children, Max and Caroline.
The theme celebrates the connections between Elkhart County's agricultural heritage and its thriving cities, businesses and industries. For Kieffer, who described himself as a city kid who married into a farm family and became a 4-H dad, that connection is personal.
"At the fair, we celebrate the spirit of Elkhart County, where innovation meets tradition, and everyone finds a place to belong," Kieffer said. "Whether you're from the city streets or the farm, the fair is where we all come together in boots, sneakers and everything in between."
The theme logo brings that message to life through details rooted in Elkhart County. Buildings and a street represent the city, while a barn and field rows reflect the country. A Ferris wheel connects the two, symbolizing the fair as a gathering place for the entire community. The outline of Elkhart County forms the backdrop, and an apple marks the location of Kercher's Orchard, adding a local connection to the design.
"City Roots & Country Boots" recognizes the people and traditions that make Elkhart County home. The county's RV manufacturers, entrepreneurs and small businesses share a community with family farms that have stewarded the land for generations. For nine days each summer, the Elkhart County 4-H Fair brings those experiences together, creating a shared place to celebrate agriculture, support young people and connect with neighbors.
In his remarks, Kieffer thanked the volunteers, families, businesses, and staff whose dedication makes the fair possible. As the fairgrounds prepare for new facilities and continued improvements, he emphasized teamwork, communication and a welcoming experience for every 4-H family and guest.
"We're here to create opportunities for young people. We're here to strengthen our community. We're here to preserve a tradition while preparing it for the future," Kieffer said.
The 2027 Elkhart County 4-H Fair will take place July 23–31.
